I'm with Afrihost and I logged a ticket asking if this is possible and what I need to do, but naturally I get nothing back.

1. Is it possible for me to get 1Mb (Or maybe more) up stream on my 4mb uncapped account??
2. What do I need to do to get it?
3. I'm willing to pay extra, but what costs am I looking at?

Sadly, fiber is not available to me yet so I have to look at getting what I want on crappy copper.

I hope someone here might have some advice and/or options for me.

Regards
Nick

The upstream is determined by your line speed & not your data package. If you want 1mbps upstream you need a 10mbps line.

You will max get 0.8Mbps after overheads. Do not expect to be able to sustain that upload.

Have you considered using a 3G or LTE connection for uploads? They are capable reaching 1Mbps with ease.

+1. I can only get 2Mbit/s ADSL at home with 512Kbit/s upload, although usually it's far slower than that. I've got a 3G router with an Afrihost mobile sim that I use if I want to do big uploads. Works like a charm, I can usually upload at 2.5Mbit/s on 3G.

20Mbps and 40Mbps VDSL lines give 2mbps and 3mbps upload respectively.

You need to get a diginet line from Telkom. They install these dedicated from their local offices to your house. If you are hosting get a cloud solution like Amazon EC2.

I know, but Afrihost manages my line which is why I asked them. OK, so if I get a 10Mb bundle package I will have 1Mb up stream? I can't see that being mentioned on Afrihost's site. 1mb up should be OK, at least until we can get Fiber.

I'm not planning to upload much of anything really, it's just now and then that we do something (like some small'ish backups) that requires a little more up stream bandwidth that 512 and then kills the downstream. I either then just wait or I have to limit the App's speed so we can continue browsing while we wait for the upload. I'm not hosting anything either.

I just want things to be more useable.
