Hi guys,

I have a Windows 8 Key which I had used on my laptop. I no longer use Windows 8 on my laptop - went back to Windows 7. I want to install Windows 8 on another laptop, but use the CD Key that I used on my laptop. Will my CD Key activate on the other laptop?

Im clueless when it comes to this key stuff.

Thanks.

yeah just phone them to activate , they will tell you been used before , then you have option to select its my first install :P

its so stupid i have even activated a pirated key before to see what if they pick it up, i select i bought it in store , and then select its my first install , the automated call centre is stupid :P

What number does one call? I messaged Microsoft SA on Facebook because my place was robbed and they took my new PC, which had downloaded win 8 on it. They didn't take the installation cd so I still have that plus the email with reference codes and all that junk. The rep on FB basically told me that it can only be used on one system and if that system was stolen, well tough luck. That can't be right, surely.

I've almost cobbled together a replacement PC and need to work this out.

Great thanks. Do you think I have a leg to stand on? Never even dawned on me that I wouldn't be able to install it again.

So long as your install was a DSP or retail license key, yes you can port it over to another machine.

0801 43 43 43 - Activation centre, active 24/7

However, if your license was an upgrade license, it'll be a little tricky to get it to install. If this is the case, there are other forumites here who can help you with activating and cracking it.

Is it a OEM version that came with the laptop? If it's the case then it might not be possible but I'm not sure at all. Best to try your luck, got nothing to lose.

Thanks for the contact detail - it is a CD Key on its own - not an upgrade CD Key or OEM CD Key.

No, it's not correct. If it's an upgrade or System Builder version then you can move it to another machine. Tell these Microsoft SA clowns to go read the license (because they clearly haven't).

I swapped out the MB/Processor on the office WP8 upgrade system (boxed version from Makro, upgraded a WinXP licence to Win8 + Media). It detected the system change and I had to phone the automated registration number to re-activate which it did with no problems - typing in all those number strings on my phone was a bitch though.
