Can Microsoft handle Skype?

Microsoft has bought Skype for US$8.5 billion. What are they getting for all that money, and can they rise above the inherent challenges?

Yet another application that will have Microsoft own the desktop even more.

Yes they can

8.5 billion might seem very steep but thinking about in the long run - its totally worth it. They'll be able to cover all of that n make a profit. Its a sound investment in my books

Jees yeah thats quite a lot of money... but hopefully Microsoft can clean up the few issues that exist and make it work even better. Also a good investment too me as well.

I just hope, Microsoft will consider the other platforms, Mac and *Nix, for future releases, and not make in Windows-only.

Also, the name, the name is synonymous with "VoIP" - from a consumer perspective. I hope they keep the name.

That's my two cents worth...

I point to Microsoft's relationship with Nokia.

I believe the smartphone is the biggest hope for Skype to grow their revenue.

Partnerships with network carriers like MTN would lead to greater use of data through VoIP, and with the large number of phones that Nokia expects to sell in what seems like a revival of its marketing and cutting edge device production (E6, E7, E8 etc more to come in the near future), it is easy to visualise Nokia and Microsoft embedding Skype with their smartphones, even allowing other device users to upgrade their software (Symbian S60 etc) so that they too would have Skype embedded and easy to use for VoIP telephony.

Microsoft will merge these technology somehow and this is how I see them doing it. Buying Skype gives Microsoft greater bargaining power with networks to allow it to do exactly what it needs to do with the technology available.

This where I see it going.

Was skype broke to begin with? Does it even need fixing?

They cannot even get their operating systems to work without service packs, security patches, and other glitch-fixing (?) releases, now they buy Skype ... possibly contributing even more to that age-old oxymoron that "Microsoft Works".

This is a VERY smart move by Microsoft. One can now make internet calls out of the box when installing Windows...what a selling point that is going to be. WOW!

Every piece of software needs updates and fixes, no software is flawless. I never used Skype so I wouldn't know what issues it has, but for some reason I believe Microsoft can make it better if it needs fixing.

Its pretty solid, I don't know what needs to be fixed/improved.

Every software vendor in the world releases ongoing fixes and service packs for their products. If MS didn't release fixes for their products they would get slammed even more.

Just look at Skypes fixes

Hope everybody knows that Skype was running a loss. Add to that the the VoIP tech(SILK) that Skype used was released into the wild weeks before the sale so only thing M$ bought was the POP's and the customers.

I dont think they will kill off Other OS clients, but what I can see happening is that new features(Bloat) that Microsoft is know for will not be added to the other platforms.

You have a link for this?

In 2010 they posted a profit

Cool they made $20 million from the previous years $352 million loss? If the company didn't sell it they would still be worse off having the IP If you invested that money you would get better return on investment.

I suspect that MS are aware of the due diligence process.

I am sure they are, but if everybody quits using Skype today, no amount of assists would be able to make up for it, and M$ would be a couple of billion in the red.

I am not saying people are going to quit, its just a possibility that you have to risk.
