For the last few weeks now, i could only stream youtube on 144p, and my web pages would only load after about 5 mins. Torrents were at around 14kb/s. I found out on Saturday that i was no longer connected to the Dslam or something was wrong with my line.

the technician is at my place, but says nothing is wrong. Says he will replace my phone line, as my existing phone line is quite old. *sigh*

could this be the problem ie an old phone line? Technician has been to the exchange, but came back saying nothing is wrong, and that he will just replace the phone cable.

When i spoke to Telkom, they could clearly see on their end that something was wrong, as according to them, i was able to get a connection but very intermittently or slow as hell, and this was due to me no longer being connected at the DSLAM.

Im waiting for this guy to complete what he is doing ie changing the phone cable, and then see what happens. But if that doesnt solve the issue, then any ideas guys as to what might be going on?

could it possibly be my Router acting up?

Could be the cable.

I had a break in my copper, which caused me endless hassles. Eventually the line was replaced from the drop right up to the DP and everything returned to normal.

DSL needs a "pair" of wires to operate correctly, but it CAN operate on only one wire (i.e. one of the wires in the pair is broken), and it's times like that when the DSL performs badly, or when telkom "detects" a cabling fault.

Let Telkom do their bits first :-)

If you are no longer connected to the dslam, what are you connected to?

I have no idea. When i called in i was told something about me not showing up on the dslam or something to that effect, although i was still connecting all be it at a very slow and poor connection

I got mine replaced, the difference was like day and night.
Ill check it out tonight, and see if there are much changes. I wasnt home long, had to be at work, but the missus said he said he would replace the telephone cable. So not sure which cable she was referring to. She did say that he went outside to the box thats attached to the house or something

Make sure they change it right through the house otherwise it was all for nothing.

Black wire from poll to house then white wire inside.

Yeh will check all those things. Cabling is a pain though. Any slight degradation and its over. Need Fibre in my life Rickster :D

Sigh.. Still struggling to stream youtube and even netflix buffering still. Web pages are opening okay, but i get a timed out when trying to run a speed test.

A Split Pair is normally the biggest issue. A broken pair simply means a cable joint somewhere needs to be repaired. It is fairly unusual for one pair in a multicore cable to "break". The normal solution is to move your service onto another pair ..... (I hate the new word used for this -- it is called "Jumping").

You can't miraculously suddenly not be connected to the DSLAM. It is a fault. that needs to be located.

The other possibility ( far more likely to the reason) is the drop wire needs to be replaced.

Currently from what i can see, is that my voice line has been disconnected. According to the technician, i need to replace both cables ie the telephone cable and the cable going into the router, one coming from the pots filter.

Im still trying to understand, why my speed is below 1mbps on a 20mbps line. So clearly something is still not right, despite the technician claiming all is good and no issues according to his stats.

So you have no voice but your adsl is synching albeit at a far lower speed?

Maybe by "not showing up on the dslam" they mean that it is not connected to that specific port which was assigned to you? hence it's not showing up when they search on their system? It will still synch albeit at the speed of that port which it's connected to.

The tech should have picked this up though when he checked at the exchange. I think the person you spoke to over the phone is onto something, maybe pursue it in that direction and see what you get.

Ill ask them to check the port again. Its very strange at the moment.
