Ultimately , neither delusional buyers nor delusional companies set the market price for IT workers. The market sets the market price , and employers and candidates can either take that price or not get a job/employee.

Recruiters want lower prices so they can place more people. Placing two people at R30,000 pays more commission than one person at R40,000 . I have had recruiters tell me I would "battle" to get x or y figure , and then I easily got that figure. They just want to be able to place you in the salary bracket the employer is offering and move on. Its much easier that way.

Candidates are looking for opportunities to jump ship and move to a new company , but the salaries offered are preventing them from doing that. Companies offer lower salaries in the hope that they will be able to increase their profits by hiring low and selling high. However , because IT candidates are in demand , the market isn't allowing them to do that.

Case in point - the linux admin job for BidorBuy went on for months with no good takers. The Bidorbuy rep described the process as "difficult" and "frustrating". This was because they were simply not offering enough. They then raised the salary bracket. Here , we can see that the market decides the salary for you. You don't really have a say in the matter , even if you are BidorBuy.

What's going on with the "its too low" posts are that salaries are being offered that are below market related , and candidates are voicing their frustration with the fact that companies aren't in line with what the market is paying. If the salaries were on the high side , nobody would complain.

+10.

Are advertised salaries to be taken seriously though? Aren't they merely baseline figures? Aren't packages in the private sector all negotiable depending on what the candidate brings to the table?

Well, any company worth working for should at least have a budget that they can afford for the position. If you bring a lot more to the table, but they do not have the budget, there isn't a lot they can do about it.

True, but if the baseline is too low for the job spec provided they may be discarded by applicants. I have done that before.
