I am getting a netbook to take down to university with me because I don't want to lug my whole desktop with me, and the great battery life means I can use them in lectures to take notes.

but I want to know if its possible at all to run games on them. They will be older games like starcraft and age of empires 2. The most demanding game I would think to possibly run would be warcraft 3

This is the specific model I'm getting as there don't seem to be any with the nvidia ion in this country. Atleat that I could find

Well, I have an EEE 702, which is lower spec'd than that machine, and it ran Quake3 at well over 100fps after a bit of tuning, so Starcraft shouldn't be an issue. Warcraft 3 it can do as well, but it struggles quite often, so I wouldn't really call it very playable. Again, that model would probably cope better as it is better spec'd than the 702.

I haven't really played games on my netbook, but when browsing through the forums it appears that a lot of people do run games on them, even if only some of the older games.

If you dont need a netbook go for something like this:

3 Series? Can't see anything in the spec mentioning it, unless PC Int didn't list it. Currently on a Asus 1201N(9400M plus dual-core Atom) and I've been able to play my source engine based games (aka need of Steam) and it's quite smooth, just that the price in SA is quite something lol.

Torchlight has a netbook mode. That's definitely worth getting if you like Diablo type games.

Thanks for the quick replies this forum has always been most helpful

I have some old games that require a key CD - but netbooks don't have CD drives !

Anybody know how to copy an image to a 1GB SD card ? Or is there a better way ?

You can split the cds/dvds with Alcohol 120%. Although it would take some time. Or use Winrar.

Emulators and classics abound - N64, PSX, SNES, arcade etc - and they will all be very playable. But if you can find an Ion netbook it will be really worth the extra I think.

You can get an HP Mini 311 from Dion Wired for R4999. If you want to be really hardcore, Alienware is releasing an 11-inch laptop that has a Geforce 3XX series GPU in it. I'd avoid putting that on my lap for fear of sterilization :)

I found the new asus eee 1201 which has the nvidia ion and the newer dual core atom cpu at landmark. Do they have a physical store I can go to or are they online only?

Ah bugger I'm in JHB. Oh well I guess I'll just have to order online and get it delivered to me at Rhodes. Thanks again for all the help a and suggestions folks
