Can you install your own software when being an IT system admin

If you are studying. Its probably better trying at home using VMWare Workstation to create a virtual environment at home or maybe using AWS Cloud for creating a virtual workspace to try install this too.

But companies would generally say no. Any piece of software should get tested thoroughly and will have to go through security protocols before it gets added into the company network. One of the easiest ways to get trojans and spyware is by users installing their own stuff. As such admin access would normally need to be applied for with special reasons. Any damage to the company infrastructure will be on your account. Yip if there is a system leak you may not only be found criminally liable but you may also be fined a penalty (depending on the damage caused). Its becoming more and more frequent that your pension in its entirety is withheld by the company.

So quite honestly. VMWare at home or AWS Cloud will be your best solution. The Advantage of VMWare is that you can run multiple virtual workstations, ie Linux, Unix, Ubuntu, IOS, Windows etc etc and so on. And you can turn them on and off as you need it.

Personally.

Depending what degree you have.

I would suggest studying AWS. There is free AWS training centres in Cape Town. I get spammed by them often.

Then go into data science. Thats the next best thing.

Oh please stop talking kak.

Not only will it not be for your account, you also won’t be criminally liable unless there was specific intent.

And don’t make me laugh at fines and penalties. At best you’ll get a warning.

And nobody can touch your pension.

Never read so much fear mongering bullshit in my entire life.

in the IT community which format do they mostly use.I am just inquisitive.
tar.gz is pretty standard to see or tar.bz

Old answer, but still pretty relevant in explaining why one may pick one over the other (speed vs compression mainly).

"but i am struggilng with one section and cant get the hang of it........the tar command."

Don't attempt the exam until it's all MUSCLE MEMORY - pretend you've been woken up in the middle of the night, someone has put a gun to your head and said do this and suceed, or I shoot...

man pages, --help examples, learn where to find them and access them in a heartbeat if needed, better yet know it so you don't need them. Time is at a premium. If you're slow you WILL fail.

Also read the ENTIRE exam and then plan it accordingly.

The exam is about providing a machine in a specific state and gets marked as such. If it doesn’t boot you get zero.

Therefore it’s not in a particular order and you’ll find if you do Question 3 one way you may not be able to do Question 7.

It’s like a mini project and should be approached as such.

Also make damn sure you know how to reset the root password from the boot loader before attempting this exam.

Ok so what i have learned so far is must i go into config files for this , where the grub config files are.<Ok no need to answer that as i think during my lessons i will come across that or is it a separate thing.

You guys a re excellent man helping a old man getting closer to a dream.I was hoping to study 3 hours a day but i can only manage 7 hours a week and an instructor said 5 hours a week is ok for a term of 6 to 8 months.Like that guy said muscle memory is important so i am hoping to do this course over and over and over about 5 times.Surely thats enough...damn my brain mush.
Another major issue is my typing on the keyboard is weak and i make alot of mistakes and correct them.It might be the kak keyboard i got or my fat finger.Ag ja i flin dont know/faaaak

You can’t get into the grub config files if you don’t gave access to the system…

But yes it should be covered, I’m just giving you a very strong hint to know this otherwise you might not even start the exam and burn all your money.

Learning to type properly is a major skill in IT. Try run yourself through an online typing tutor for 10min before you start every day.

But also, it’s Linux so tab is your friend to reduce typing and not make mistakes.

i use the tab alot.I dont think the online typing tutor will actually help, old dog with nasty habits die hard. But i will give it a go....thanks

Only way to break old habits is to replace them with new ones.
Can an old dog really get better at typing on a keyboard when he has been on it for 20 something years and still bad.i wonder, let me break out that gaming mechanical from my son,The disco lights on it might make my fingers dance to the tune

Is this a stupid question,is mouse allowed in the exam or do you just get a terminal.I also want to know in my studies must i refrain from using the mouse and just use pure keyboard.Sorry for such a daft question.

There is a bit of GUI interaction with the exam itself and it runs inside a Red Hat Desktop Environment.

Everything exam wise happens in the terminal and doesn’t require a mouse.

Technically you could use GUI tools like gedit and network configurations etc but would be somewhat pointless.

If anything you might use the TUI tools instead if you really wanted to.

What would you use the mouse for? The question isn’t silly but doesn’t really make sense either.

sorry for asking this as i read on reddit someone use a program where you have 2 gpu,s and can run 2 distros on separate screens from one pc and it seems natively.I think its called glass something.Do corporate use things like this.
My homelab i crashed it and want to start over. This is what i have now in hardware
1- 2 laptops
1-macbook pro late 2008(ssd upgrade and ram-mojavi dual boot with catalina)
1- jailbroken ps3
2 monitors 50 inch and 23 inch
1-desktop pc with gpu gtx1080ti and gtx 1050ti
What suggestion would you do if you wanted to start fresh with homelab
I asked this on other sites and everyone gives different answers, but i am having a problem with the network cards as most do not support realtek hardware

thank you for the insight.i am at users and group management ,cant say i am looking forward to the bash scripting and network management. You were on the ball when you said its not easy but i find comfort in knowing what you told me, do it over and over and over till its embedded.

the reason i asked about the mouse is because of gedit and scrolling pages and so on.I so used to windows that i love having a mouse at hand.
Anyway i wlll be coming back to this thread real soon.
Also just another question.I created a useradd XXX and i used command chage -d 0 XXx and logged out but when i logged in there was no user i created only the original one
i then used grep XXX /etc/passwd and the user was in the etc.I tried to figure it out what did i do wrong but i still dont see the user that must login to change his password.
I think i will sleep on it tonight, mayby its a simple fix.

The sooner you get to grips with vi/m the better.

Many other tools use the same syntax and shortcuts.

Forget the GUI exists.

****

Sounds like you created the user just fine, but didn’t create a Home folder.

What makes you think the user wasn’t created!? All the signs are there that it was.

User <> Home Folder.
