Thats why I say this would never happen in SA.

Our cops would have been shooting rubber bullets into the crowd, there would be armoured Caspers and Nyala's in the streets and they'd probably be shooting teargas from helicopters.

Our history is founded on protests, and our cops deal with it all the time, and are usually very effective at dispersing protesters.

Cops should be allowed to to hit back and not worry about being sued. People acting like this need to be dealt with. Scum of the earth.
 
Are you guys aware that the very next day... every1 or most people who took part in the riots, didnt goto work and instead went on clean up duty for the day cleaning all the mess they left behind.

They may have gotten carried away, but at least they grouped together and made a concerted effort to clean up... you will NEVER see that here....

Where did you get this idea from?

You don't have the right to riot. You have the right to demonstrate peacefully but you have no right to riot. The minute you damage someone's property or trespass or anything like that during your demonstration you can expect the police to respond with the force necessary to stop you.

I have to say though wow those Canadians know how to riot. :D

It was one of the gems i thought up.

Out of all the protests we have in this country how many of them end up in riots or at least people smashing things up? If you protest and smash up shop fronts and cars and or burn down buildings, who pays for that?

That doesn't mean we have a right to. No South African has the right to riot. You have a right to demonstrate but that demonstration must be peaceful.

In an ideal world those that did the damage would be responsible for it. It is of course practically impossible to track down the individuals responsible for the damage. There is just too much chaos.

If people had a right to riot then it would be perfectly acceptable for some dude to walk up to your car and start smashing it to pieces with his bat and then when the cops arrived he could just say "no no I'm rioting as is my right" to which the cops would respond "oh that is OK then you just go right ahead and destroy this dude's property". Insanity.
 
Now if the guavamint said NO protesting and only written submission will be accepted that would mean a paper trail and people would demand answers from the guavamint in the form of a written reply. By allowing us to protest and or riot, the guavamint can turn a blind eye to what is happening.

You ARE allowed to protest peacefully mate.

You AREN'T allowed to riot.

They are 2 entirely different things. Why are you acting like they're the same thing? What part of this aren't you getting?
