I was checking packages in France. At one ISP, for the princely sum of about R1k a month, you get 8Gbps fibre, all the TV channels includ canal+ sports etc , and subscriptions to Netflix, Paramount , HBO, Disney +

If you have a cellphone SIM card it's also reduced in price and becomes unlimited data etc

Seriously, if they C+ can bring in this type of thinking and disruption to the local market, then it becomes interesting.

Satellite TV can't, or at least want everyone to believe that, worldwide. Best we can hope for seems to be more and smaller package choices, like is done in New Zealand.

The question then is; - How did they manage to determine the bouquets in the first place? In this digital age, clicking choices by a subscriber should be simple. Add to cart has been a thing for a while now.

A lot of what DStv did had an uncanny resemblance to UK Sky TV.

Some of this was learnt from senior MC staff on their forum, some elsewhere;

The various supplying studios and like each have their own interests - will only supply if minor-interest channels x & y are included, long term contracts needed to drop prices, certain market advantages expected such as with channel numbering, competition considerations with other suppliers involved, and so on.
Apparently some suppliers even insist on not being on some smaller packages, I presume to bolster their status.

Then there's political considerations and rules. And I learned that it can differ surprisingly widely from country to country in Africa.

And one of the main reasons we ever even got good tv here at all is the security - MC have to guarantee certain levels of anti-piracy effort, some US studios wouldn't even have given them the time of day otherwise.


Despite that complexity, they're clearly able to do better - a couple of years ago they showed Forumites here a test concept that included smaller sport package options. So they can fall back on that somewhat.
(Not possible to get rugby AND cricket cheaply though.)

That's the hope. And not a bad start by them, as far as their own efforts go.

They were even reconsidering it as late as July / August this year

Nothing new here. It's like the Netflix, where 90% of the stuff is garbage.

With Netflix you get what you pay for, it's like four times cheaper than DSTV.
