Disclaimer: If this all makes me sound mean, I'm sorry. I can handle a lot of things, but slow internet is not one of them. I'm actually a very nice person :P

Thought you guys might be interested in my convo is a guy from Axxess.
I spent a few weeks dealing with them trying to figure out why my internet was so bad, and then FINALLY one of their support guys explained that my speeds were normal for a "managed" account.

Axxess and Afrihost use the same network but have completely seperate shaping policies and methods.
How Axxess' shaping works is that customers are unshaped until the system determines that they are abusing it, then they are moved into a "managed" profile.
There is no set value at which this happens, and is based on a rolling average based on the other users on the network and the current network strain. Once "managed" everything except actual browsing will be shaped ALOT. This includes HTTP downloads.
It will depend on the current network status but when you are managed you will be shaped to around ~ 5% to 20% of your line speed.
Every 7 days every profile is reevaluated and their managed status changed accordingly.
Even though the network is very new, their current system is moving people into managed status with usage as low as 20GB.

What this means is that if you are planning to use more than 2.8GB (maybe even less) per day, YOU WILL BE MANAGED, and then you won't be able to download anything for the next week.

Although he said a rough guess would be 5 to 20%, I was getting around 2% of my line speed. And he said that is normal. I couldn't load Google at some times. By the end of it I was restarting my account like 10 times a day because that helped for a few minutes.

The only way I got Axxess to care was to contact Afrihost on twitter (convoluted I know). But besides getting them to contact me, he's not much help.

Here are is a gem of a conversation with Afrihost via direct messages on Twitter:

AH: Have they been in touch with you at since I sent your details on to them?
Me: Yeah, but it helped absolutely nothing. They are useless. As is my "10MB" internet.
AH: Have you considered using capped for the meantime? Or just a backup account?
Me: I am paying for uncapped - not sure why I should be paying over and above that. So no.
AH: Traffic should also die down over December, and then we'll hopefully have upgrades in place early 2013 (will affect Axxess)
Me: Wait, so I should just live with this until then? You know I'm getting like 2% of the speed I am paying for right?
AH: If their system is like ours, capped will give better speeds on downloads. Maybe they will let you regrade to a capped account?

I moved to Axxess about 2 months ago from MWEB, and was not totally convinced it was the right thing to do. So just incase, I kept my MWEB account and downgraded it to a 1MB. Here is a comparison of my speed test with a 10MB Axxess account and a 1MB MWEB account:
Axxess: http://www.speedtest.net/result/2350239717.png
MWEB: http://www.speedtest.net/result/2350262631.png

Yes, while being managed, MWEB 1MB is 5 times faster than Axxess' 10MB. And people I've sent this to say their experience is identical to mine.

After bitching I eventually got them to allow me to cancel after the 25'th, and just bill me pro-rata. I could not live with how terrible it was. And regardless if this gets fixed in the future, this has left such a bad taste, that I won't be coming back - and will probably recommend friends to not use them either.
I am now happily using MWEB 1MB and the internet is FLYING comparatively.

It worries me that there are so many users on here and other sites that are having problems, and that Axxess/Afrihost haven't made an official announcement and just direct everyone to their support like the problem is specific to that user.

So I will end by quoting something I sent to the support guy I was dealing with:

So in the nicest possible way, I hope you guys lose customers by the hundreds until you realize that your current system for “managing” users is terrible and make another plan.

Fark me but I will never put up with a service like that and still pay full price. I will move upon the first sign of being unable to use the internet.

I wouldn't either usually. But when moving to them I had a good picture of them in my mind. Everyone loves Afrihost (well according to awards) and I have had a good experience with Axxess in the past. So I wanted to believe that this was a temporary glitch in the matrix. I only realized late on just how many people are in the same boat as me.

Since when did you start experiencing being 'managed'. I can understand they want to keep everyone happy but to kill you off like what you describe is not cool.

I would have moved too. Everyone in my close family (brother, parents) I signed up with Afrihost. LOL.. my brother was 1 month on afrihost then the shaping/throttling started. He was not happy. My parents were on afrihost for 4-5 months about.. good speeds etc.

Then they started getting shaped to h3ll. And this is on people that might use 20-40 gig a month on 1 meg (if I help :D). When I cancelled their, they were on 10Gig.. and throttled. Got 7-10kb/s on 1 Meg line... (explain that).

I used to like Afrihost.. but this left me with a bad taste. Not rage quitting on them.. but when you pay full price and you can't use the web that makes me angry.

Not 100% sure, but it started about 3 weeks ago from looking at messages.

I have also cancelled my 10mb 'uncapped' . What they don't seem to understand\comprehend is that with a 10mb uncapped I don't want to queue up downloads at night, I have a 10mb uncapped product to watch\use what I want now. But now is 60Kb/s on a 10mb 'uncapped' product so what is the point of having 10mb then?

I am quoting this from a previous post of mine

Also I can't believe that after the whole bad experience when they first tried to offer uncapped and many people got burned, that they will allow this to happen. I mean really who is going to trust them or use them in the future. Even at half the price that now charge, who in their right mind will go with them? Also all those people like me that were fanboys that would counter every bad Afrihost remark made by other users, we are now made out to be real tits.

Well I've considered going with Afrihost in the past but will go with someone else come the next week as I've started my move from using 8ta and Cell C to ADSL. Hopefully I will be up and running come next week wednesday.

What was your usage prior to your account being managed!
Based on what the guy told me that they use the prior week to work out if you must be managed, my week of usage before getting managed was 25GB. But if you browse around MyBB you will see people that have been managed with less usage than that over an entire month.

I supposedly was managed last month for a few days according to their support however I continued to get full speeds on everything so still confused by that.
Total usage last month was 180GB and I have done 30GB past 10 days but not managed currently.
I cancelled end of last month so this is my last month but will see how it goes.At the moment I am almost scared to do more than 5GB a day.Not cool! This on a 10MB account.

O.o I did 120GB on my 10Mb account last month before being "managed" down to 50kB/s 24/7, I'm still "managed" after only doing about 30GB so far this month.

It's fun trying to download a 50MB PDF for work at 50kB/s

I had to download the new Adobe reader to continue with SARS efiling @ 50Kb/s, fun fun

I started the new month on "Managed", and I've been stuck like that for the last week... and this is on a 1Mbps account.

I'm moving to Plugg as soon as I have the time and patience to deal with Axxess.

Downloading at 2-10KB/s, such an awesome experience, it's like having 64k ISDN again! At least ISDN could sustain a constant speed.

Good read rogue. I myself recently moved over to Openweb since I was unable to even game most evenings due to latency issues. Since moving I havnt had a single issue. You know your internet is good when you dont do a speedtest every hour!!
