Cancelling DSTV

If you use the option to switch the service on and off when needed, how long does it take to reactivate? Is it immediate?

If you pay via debit order, does this mean that you would have a credit every month, that would accumulate until you ask them to pay you out?

Sorry, I know this is not the Multichoice Customer Care Thread... just hoping that someone might have had the same questions and found answers :)

Yes, it activates immediately.

If you pay by debit order you will just get billed for the amount of days you used the service. I got a debit for about R40 last month.

Cool.. but don't you normally get billed in advance?

I am not sure about that. The first time I switched off my service it was in the middle of the month so I got a credit on my account.

It then got used up in the following months as you switch your service on and off. Once the credit was gone I only received accounts for what I used. If you owed them nothing and the debit order date has passed they can't take money off your account. They will charge you the next month.

Don't worry to much about this, DSTV has yet to charge me anything they should not have.

Thanks bru.. I think I'm definitely gonna start doing this.. I probably watch DSTV twice a week.. and normally for 1 hour at a time.. rest of the time I am streaming stuff off the internet.. or watching stuff i downloaded.

If one at any stage wants to stop DStv, is it better to "Disconnect services" (refer DStv WhatsApp screenshot), ...

OR

..... acceptable enough to do nothing when the next billing date arrives (mine is 1st of every month), and the system automatically cuts your decoder's satellite signal ?

Right now, I don't want to tap on "Disconnect services" in case they do, with almost a full month paid for still to run.

In the past I thought / felt it was good enough to do nothing, let the signal be cut and then if you want to start it again, pay the reactivation fee along with charge of package selected.

But from this thread, people seem to actively cancel.

@Brian_G - presume you'd know which is best, if it even matters ?

Thread is 10 years old, wouldn't trust its info.

Not something I'm much experienced in, but I think safer to talk to an agent.
Letting an account lapse could work or they could keep it going hoping you'll be back and pay.
Agree about the app's disconnect option - at least wait until you're in the last month if going with that option. But then how do you confirm it's been done?...

Thanks for your quick replies.

I didn't want to start a new one, so searched + found an aptly named thread.

The thing is, DStv have allowed users to let things lapse (probably because reactivation is then easy + results in a further fee) instead of having to outright cancel.

I've been surprised by the ability over the years to do this, so as you suggested will contact them at some stage to see if they still allow it ... and even encourage doing it.

You're effectively logged into the app with your credentials, so when paying for example, they send a link + soon after payment it shows a 0.00 balance ; therefore records are kept within the app itself.

I presume the same when one uses it to cancel and / or reinstate.

That alone will ring an alarm bell for many.
If it's unofficial they can change what they like - and if they're losing too many customers they may now ignore missed payments for a while.

Sounds reasonable. I don't trust SA service, so I try not to settle for less than human contact ;-)

When I canceled my DSTV I just simply stopped paying them until they cut off services. I wasn’t in the mood to talk to an agent to cancel and then have them try to sell me on something else.

I do still get sms’s/calls every now and then from then saying if I reconnect they will give me half price for the first month or first 3 months.

Generally been my line of thinking re DStv.

I'm not that concerned with them trying to sell me something else, as have never found any of their agents to be pushy.

I'm more concerned with them cancelling my service too early, if I contact them before the following month's due date.

Just tell them to cancel on the last day of the month, if you have paid for the full month then they would have no reason to cut off your services before then, or else they would owe you money for the remaining days.
