As a last resort b4 i unbrand my P990i, let me ask this:
Is it possible to access my pop3 email from work, Gmail, Yahoo if one has a ‘slightly’ branded Vodafone P990i??? I’ve tried every setting possible from various posts over the web. I use the Gmail and Opera Mini apps and they work fine. Meaning I can access my mail and browse the internet fine through these. BUT, (and that’s a big but) I would like to download / access my mail through the built in Messaging manager of the P990i.

I’ve tried every possible setting out there. But every time I do a ‘Get & Send’ I get the following error msg: ‘The download failed because the account has errors in its server settings’. After every option tried I have to assume that Vodacom does not allow me access to outside servers via my Vodafone account.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanx

PS this is my very 1st post so don’t disappoint me guys and girlies:)

Have you tried it with the internet apn, with no proxy settings?

@Syndyre - Yep, i have ssl enabled and even tried different incoming ports. Currently set to 465.

@vodacom3g - i'm not sure what u mean "Have you tried it with the internet apn, with no proxy settings?" What do i have to do to change the proxy settings?

Thanx for your replies

This is on my SE W800i, not sure if the interface on your P990i is similar or not but if you go to connectivity > Internet settings > Internet profiles then choose the settings you're using, probably vlive, open them and then change "use proxy" from "yes" to "no".

Nope:( i went Control Panel, Connections, Internet accounts. Opened my Vlive account, then clicked on Data account, Proxy and then unchecked the "Use proxy server" Still gives the same error. I dont think i'm doing something wrong but i could be stupid or at least thats what my girlfriend says.

OK let me ask this. Is anyone able to access their pop email or Gmail from a P990i just by setting up the email accounts in the Messaging accounts settings and downloading the mail through the built in Message interface. I fail to think i'm the only one out there.
PS i think this forums ROCK!

Is there any other mail server that perhaps doesn't use SSL you can test it out on? Maybe create a new account using the internet apn rather than the vlive apn.

I cannot believe it. I did it!!! Give me a few minutes to work out exactly what i did then i'll post. Yepee, now i'm truly mobile. I luv my P990i :D :D and uuuhmm my girlfriend . . . what's her name . . . oh yes Honey:)

Find the setting where the apn name is set (will be vlive at the moment) and set that to 'internet' and try again.

By using the internet apn you connect directly to the internet without going throught the WAP gateways.

How to setup Gmail and Pop3 mail on P990i

How to setup Gmail and Pop email on your P990i

The secret is to setup your WAP and MMS from SE website
http://www.sonyericsson.com/spg.jsp...template=ps1_1_1_1&zone=ps&lm=ps1_1&pid=10336

Just follow the steps. It's easy.
I got a error with the WAP configuration "Error occured while processing the provisioning document" but the internet account was still setup.
Then i did the MMS config for good measure.

Then i setup my accounts as follows.
Pop3
On your fone go to Tools > Control Panel > Messaging > Email accounts.
Tap on New and then input regular stuff like Account name, your name, Email address. Obviously you'll have to select POP3 as the Connection type
Tap on Inbox
Add your incoming server address, Username, password and your preferences
Go to Outbox settings and add the following
Outgoing server address: smtp.vodacom.co.za
Use SMTP authentication - YES
Use inbox login details - YES
Send using group - Preferred group or the internet account as setup through SE website

Now tap on Email account (top right hand corner) or it might be your account name, and select Advanced
Incoming - these settings might differ
Secure connection - None
Port 110
Secure password authentication - unchecked

Outgoing - these settings might differ
Secure connection - None
Port 25
Use mime encoding - checked

That's it. Save advanced settings and save new mail account settings.

Now go to your Messages, select the appropriate account and do a 'get & send'

Gmail
Go to Messaging settings > Email accounts > New (you know the drill)
Account name - Gmail
Your name - **** ****
Email address - ****@gmail.com
Connection type - POP3
Inbox
Incoming server address - pop.gmail.com
username - ****#gmail.com
password - ****
Outbox
Outgoing server address - smtp.gmail.com
Use SMTP authentication - YES
Use inbox login details - YES

Advanced
Incoming
Secure Connection - SSL
Incoming mail port - 995
Secure password authentication - NO
Outgoing
Secure Connection - SSL
Outgoing mail port - 465
Use MIME encoding - NO

Then i followed this link
http://kevinhenrikson.com/2006/06/18/gmail-pop-ssl-certs-for-symbian-nokia-phones/
after i googled gmail certificate. I opted to downloaded the Gmail certificate directly onto the phone.Open your browser and go to: http://www.ocasta.co.uk/cert.html - download the Gmail certificate (Equifax) Remember to install this after the download.

Then (to finish off) all i needed to do was to do a 'get & send' I tested and all is well. Even send mail from Gmail to Pop mail and back replied with attachments. You could say i'm very pleased with myself :)

Syndyre - I'm using Win2k3 as workstation. So MyPhoneExplorer doesnt work. Also the native SE sync software is as you say. I'll try it @ work. Thanx

To all the other reply-ees, Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.

v3g - i think i basically did what you said but only took the long way around. Thanx. I hope my experience will be more usefull to my fellow noobs out there ;)
