Doesn't the Canon 500D come with Zoom EX or something?
Can you not download - with maybe that MTN 24hr thing (R50.00)?

Wow - off topic, but that Portrait Professional looks good for $40!

EDIT : Downloaded the trial ... actually not bad!

You can grab the ISO of the software CD from here for the time being:
http://hedron.cube.co.za/canon_eos500d.iso.zip - It's a 183MB file.

Let me know when you got it so I can revoke it again. I'll leave it up for the next 3 days.

Comments: get a good multi-purpose lens for the 15MP sensor, maybe the 15-85mm IS lens?

Thanks for the assistance and trouble you went to - much appreciated.

Will bear the lens in mind.

Busy downloading file now - hope the Gardner doesn't shred the lawnmower cord again which cut me off last time I was busy downloading a large file and the power was "cut"............

Where did you get your 500d from if I may ask?

Cheers

Cheers

Cool.

I've got a 550D and the software, can make you a copy if you like? Where are you based?

Cheers
Wesley

I'm in JHB, you coming through anytime soon?

Or I could mail you the cd if you like?

Don't you have any friends who have like...the...internetz?
Only updates are available from canon and they require an earlier version to be installed.

Hi Wesley

I am possibly getting the copies of origional 500D CD's here in Pretoria, if however that doesn't transpire then I will take you up on your kind offer -- Thanks

I'm a bit confused. Didn't you download it at the link I posted? I had a look in my server logs and in the three days it was up (for you) it was downloaded 3 times from different locations in ZA (and one in turkey - go figure).

Since I took it down, I've had over 150 missed hits for the file. Weirdness abounds.

Hi Deckert
Thanks I did download but I couldn't extract to a cd. I am not a fundi at IT and hence I think the best option for me would be to get copies of the CD so that it is a plug and play cenario for me, I have also had hassles with my router - D-Link hit by lightening and couldn't replace it so I was forced to get a Belkin N+ and I am having hassles with it hence I forgot to complete my side of the deal by saying I completed the download - sorry.

Nope. If you're on Windows, create a registry entry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software: if Canon is not there, create it, then under Canon, create DPP. The software downloaded from Canon will then install (doesn't matter if it's DPP or ZB). I've just had to do it again this morning after uninstalling DPP 3.9.3 to reinstall DPP 3.6.1 (3.9.3 kept crashing in my Virtualbox).

[Dunno what to do for the Mac, but I'm sure there's a hack for that too ;)]

I posted that hack, in slightly more detail, on the third post but mucking with the registry isn't everyone's cup of tea. As it stands Canon requires a previous version to be installed before you can apply the upgrade. :)

I fail to see why, as the software serves absolutely no purpose for images other than those from Canon cameras. Also, the software download is not an upgrade, it is the full blown package. The stupid installer checks for HKLM/Software/Canon/DPP (or ZB) and if either of those aren't there, it bombs out. So I will continue to help folks bypass this really dof restriction :p
