Canon 50d now official

Colour me unimpressed :o

A camera series I'm uninterested in and a lens that doesn't fit on the series I do want.

Still - 15mp will make a difference for those who print l a r g e :)
 
I guess my R1,200 EOS3 and that R1,200 50mm will have to do for now.

Amusing that the sRAW is the same resolution on the 40D and 50D. Or is sRAW a specific standard? I just assumed the size is determined by some ratio and by what size can effectively be derived from the bayer grid

I've actually got a similar problem. These lenses won't fit on my camera. When I buy a lens I need to think in terms of an FF future.

For people who don't have lenses yet, this is a brilliant all purpose lens, and I'm sure the camera will be brilliant too. I mean, wow, 18-200mm! That might be the only lens you'll ever need for that camera.

The 5D produces sharper images and you can put ultra wide lenses on it. Other than that, the 40D is the same, just with a superior screen and is also much faster.

Not bothered about the screen - as long as I can check the light in the histogram I'm sorted.

I've been asked to do a wedding or two in the near future - if I accept I'm going to be making the migration to FF sooner rather than later.

Given how long you've held on to your 300D, if you purchase a 40D/50D now with the 18-200, how long do you think you'll use that? Another three or four years? I'd say by that time the 18-200 will have paid for itself, and you can still sell it. Don't forget, you'll get more for a camera with a nice lens like that than for what the body and lens will go for separately.

Assuming it's really good, that is. If it's like the pre-IS 18-55 kits, I'm not sure I'll spend the money. Unless it's as cheap :)

Now, a 18-200mm f/2.8 would be way cool :D

I'd be curious to see how the 5D and 50D compare in terms of sharpness.

I've been amused by the bitching from the fanboys on the dpreview canon forum. "Why give us more MP, why not better high-ISO" bla bla bla. I'm the first person to say I don't need more MP, but c'mon. The 40D had better high ISO performance and better noise handling than the 30D, despite having more MP. I fully expect the 50D to be be superior to the 40D in that respect, if only by a small margin. That means the 50D is at least equal to the D300 in terms of noise handling (I think the 40D is already on par), and tops it in resolution. So what's the problem then?

Its a great camera. The screen is the only thing that worries me on it. Difficult to check the shot properly from what i have read. But then again if you shoot raw ( and who would not for a wedding) some correction via post processing is possible at not to high a cost.
 
The specs on the 50D are now very close to the Sony A700 in some regards. Interesting.

trick with that is to maybe reduce brides to bride!

Careful one of the meaning of onery is "common". Would hate them to make that connection, they might become even more onery!!!

Photographers who know how to set WB. (the only thing you can't set in post with jpeg)
I know of many wedding photographers who shoot jpeg. Every single wedding photographer I have ever seen, actually. I know of one here that shoots on a 1DsMKIII in jpeg mode. This person charges 6 grand. They don't want to be slowed down with raw conversion software. The fact of the matter is that these photographers know how to use their cameras very well, because they have lots of experience. One of the busiest, and one of the most successful, photographers in EL shoots weddings on a Nikon D40 in jpeg. He's fully booked, and does not advertise. Most shoot Canon 5D, though. And if you shoot Nikon, what are you doing shooting raw? After seeing what you can do with the Nikon D3/300 in jpeg mode, I can't understand why a wedding photographer would waste time shooting raw. With most digital cams, if you stuffed up your exposure, you're screwed, whether you shot it in raw or jpeg.

Jpeg makes business sense, for weddings.
