Canon 50d now official

Canon 50D rumours

I *hate* the back&forth bitching about new product X based on nothing but rumoured specs, but in this case it has become something slightly more than rumour. Canon's .cn website accidentally made a page live with some information on. It wasn't linked to, and wasn't complete, but some curious individual played around with URLs, figured it out and posted it elsewhere. It has been removed since, but not before it had been copied several times.

So here's a write-up by Bob Atkins about what's known so far:

Usually I wouldn't pay much attention, but a few things peaked my interest:

1. The idiotic "print" button now has another label in addition to the print label. Has Canon finally listened and made that button customisable, or at least usable?

2. ISO 3200 appears to be native, not "extended."

3. It's shown with the rumoured 18-200 IS lens.

I don't know much about the 18-200 yet. If it's got USM (with full time manual), and if it's any good, I'll buy it. I expect they're making this in response to Nikon's 18-200 VR, which from all accounts is excellent, so I expect the Canon one to be good.

50D? I have no need or justification to replace my 40D. I'm nowhere near doing the camera justice. But if if they fixed the idiotic Auto-ISO in the "creative modes" (Av, TV, M) (It actually works correctly in the idiot modes, which is even more infuriating), and if noise is as well controlled as it is on the 40D, I'd be very tempted.
 
OMG. This is gonna sound freaky and make me look like a weirdo, but I dreamt about the Canon 50D this morning! :eek: :o

My first thought is YES! But when I got my 40D it was cheaper than I could find old stock of new 30D bodies anywhere. Then again, the 450D is about the same price as the 1000D right now, so anything is possible.

I think "extended" is just code for we'll give it to you but its going to be noisy. Normal is also a bit of a misnomer because it's not like you're changing sensors like you do with film.

Surely you have one native ISO and then then rest is little more than digital amplification?

50D - surprised they're planning on an upgrade so soon after the 40D which was only announced Aug 07.

No, the "normal" is a balance between various things, while the "extended" is an amplification across the board. That's why the extended ISO looks so much worse.

Me too. I would have thought they'd grace us with the 5DmkII first. I guess they need to respond to the stuff the competition has out. D300, K10D, whatever Sony has (I'm not really paying attention there), and their own 450D must be eating away at the 40D sales.

"Normal" is still amplified though as there is only one natural or base ISO - after all the sensor doesn't physically change does it. As ISO goes higher so does the noise. Canon says 100-1600 (or 3200) because the noise is deemed to be acceptable "extended" may fall beyond that range of acceptability but afaik its still the same mojo.
 
I'll have to go find my notes on this. I have read up about this, and what I remember is that there is a difference between adjusting the sensitivity between "normal" ISO stops and the expanded modes.

That's the general consensus on the 10D-40D forums over at dpreview. But then, the general consensus there is also that the upgrade isn't worth ****, and neither was the upgrade from the 30D to 40D, or from the 20D to 30D, or from the 10D to 20D. So I don't pay to much attention to them :)

So the rumours were more or less spot on then. I can't imagine 15MP - I was looking over some of my long exposure night shots of here and there in London last night, and the level of detail just left my head spinning. 10MP is plenty!

It's in direct competition with the Nikon lens. The 18-200VR was a very good reason to go Nikon, but now Canon have one too. It has to be good. This is a very important lens for Canon.

40D/50D + 18-200IS = happy ldmelsa
