Canon 50d now official

Its a great camera. The screen is the only thing that worries me on it. Difficult to check the shot properly from what i have read. But then again if you shoot raw ( and who would not for a wedding) some correction via post processing is possible at not to high a cost.
I think the 5D will quell my cravings for a while :) I agree about RAW. If you're savvy enough and understand your software, plus have hardware to support it properly, the added overhead is minimal and well worth it.

Anyway - this thread is supposed to be about the 50D. . . . :)

I dunno about that. My 40D's screen brightness is set to 50% and that's more than enough to check the shot in even bright sunshine. I cannot see how it deserves any criticism, except for resolution (and only because the Nikon D300 has more pixels), which they've now addressed.

Like that's ever stopped us before :D

So when are you getting it?

I know - but it can lead to confusion . . . apparently :)
So when are you getting it?
Maybe November - my mother is coming down then so that will save me a fortune.

I have a feeling the 50d is more of a bug fix on the 40d than anything else.

What bug?

There have been plenty of unhappy 40d owners out there

I take the complaints with a giant bag of salt unless someone demonstrates it to me. On the forums especially people will always complain - they're already bitching and moaning about the 50D even though non of them have yet hold it in their hands. I've noticed that 10D/20D/30D/40D/5D owners in particular for some crazy reason expect to get $4000+ body performance and features in a sub $2000 body.

I had mine replaced because of poor battery life.

That's a dud, not a bug. Mine gives excellent battery life. As in 700+shots in RAW+JPEG with all NR on, with fair built-in flash use and a heavy-ish USM lens. And that's on the standard battery without the grip.

To add to this, the biggest complaint about the 40D I have heard is auto-focus performance. I have a 24-105L f/4, from a batch that has known problems, and I haven't had it repaired yet, and I cannot, even if I was being over critical, say that I have AF problems. It's instant, and very accurate.

The only complaint I had when I got it was accuracy, particularly in low-light, which I felt was not on par with the Pentax K100D Super I had previously. but to be fair, I had a faster lens on the Pentax. When I got my 35mm f/2 on the 40D, things improved dramatically.

I know quite a few people who have had shutters die on them. You only have to go through the hassles of taking a camera back once to become disillusioned. There are hardware bugs on the 40d beyond what is flouted (big word ;)) on the forums...

Care to mention/link a few?

No worries. Anyway, even if the 40D has bugs, that doesn't make the 50D simply a bug fix. It has a lot of new goodies - sensor and processor probably being the most significant.

Sadly, from what I can see, it still has canon's idiotic Auto-ISO implementation. FFS, why can't they just do that properly?

In idiot modes, ISO varies between 100 and 800. In "creative" modes, it varies between 400 and 800.

I still have a 20D ... only gripe I have is the LCD screen ... I wish it was a little bit bigger :(
