But was the front button focusing disabled? I'm surprised though as canon claims the default is for it to be disabled.

No, it wasn't disabled the 50D or on the 40D. At least, I'm pretty sure I have not had to configure that on either camera (or on the G9, for that matter). Maybe they've change that since in newer versions of the firmware?

So front and back button focusing were enabled? That makes no sense, whats the point of locking the focusing and then losing it when you depress the shutter button?
