Ok all you pro Camera folk, I need advice.

Firstly, I know nuttin' about Camera's, ziltch, nada....

My daughter is wanting a Canon Camera for her Xmas present, For years she has been taking snaps with her various smartphones of obscure objects and at the age of 17 wants a proper camera.

A friend wanted to sell her a 2nd hand Canon Eos 1100 for R1500, but we feel as it is Xmas, we would rather buy her a new camera.

She then told us about the Canon Eos 1300d as her next choice, so whilst I was talking to my pal Google, I found out that the 1300d is now old tech and that I should be looking at the 2000D. The thing is the 2000D appears to be cheaper....

I find all this very confusing can you suggest which of the two is the better buy for her and if there is anything else better that I should be looking at..... Lets say around the R7000 mark....

I thank you, click away! ;)

If she only want to do photos the 4000D is a cheaper option.

The wireless capability that 2000D has over the 1300D is a deal clincher for me.

All I can recommend is the Nikon D3400 with Kit lens if you can find a bundle somewhere. Really happy with it and provides image quality on par with a Canon 200D, but for ~R2k less. The Nikon D3400 with kits lens and 55-200mm lens costs around R7.3k - extra lens over the Canon for the same price. Not sure if the Nikon bundles are still available as I battled to find one in July this year.

There's always second hand Nikon Lenses for sale that could also be a positive

I missed a 35mm f/1.8G the other day for R1300. Quite depressed!

Is the second hand market for Canon or Nikon lenses bigger though?

I remember a similar a thread with a similar story. Between the 2 camera's, I'd rather get the 2000D, I'm not really a fan of used cameras. At the R7k mark, I would go Canon 200D.

I don't know much about Canon, or photography in general, but I'd get the 2000D over the 1300D - 700 more Ds...

The 200D special from Makro doesn't seem bad. I've heard good things about the new 50mm f/1.8.

The Nikon kit they have on sale also looks pretty good. Tough call.

Black Friday! Ship it to me and pick it up when your next in Cape Town. We can use it as a reason to meet for beers and shots again.

If you're looking at spending R8k on a kit, and if she's impartial to brands, the Fuji XT-100 is a terrific entry level mirrorless setup that's easy to carry and takes great photos.

Lighter and better looking than the usual DSLRs. It has great in camera post processing, and she can transfer the pics straight to her phone via the smart app. No requirements for Lightroom or Photoshop.

I will be avoiding your company until the new year as I tend to get hangovers in your presence...:p

Will be heading to the Mother City next week but not for social, just a pickup and heading home again.... next eyar awaits...
