Canon Eos 1300d vs Canon 2000D

Get the 50mm 1.8 as well. It's a great lens and worth it even thought the 18-55mm kit lens already covers the 50mm focal length

One thing we're going to need ASAP is camera bag - anyone with good recommendations?

+1 on this. And preferably one that doesnt cost R1500 like those at Orms.
On a related note, picked up the 200d with std kit lens & 50mm 1.8 for R7.5k. I read somewhere else in this thread it was going for R8k on BF.
Quite happy with it so far but its been a while since I had a SLR. Smallest dSLR available and the same sensor and processor as the much more expensive Canons. It also has dual pixel autofocus so should be good for video. Not too concerned about the older 9 AF points for my kind of photos.

Pretty sure there's no external mic jack

The other members here have posted good comments about Lowepro bags so that is a good brand to check out. Let me offer my opinion on a budget option.

I went into Dion Wired and saw a Lowepro bag and was very impressed but I didn't want to spend the money on it. They also had an excellent Mivision bag for a bit cheaper but I decided to go check out options in other stores.

So I went to Game and they had this "Voyager" bag for R599. I opened it and had a look and was very impressed. Padding was thick and stitching seemed good as well. Problem was they only had a very old dirty one (same as advertised on their website) in stock so I decided to check another branch when I was passing by on another day.

To my good fortune they had a newer model for the same price. I have attached some photos of mine. It is medium sized but carries quite a bit. What I like is that I can carry the camera with my 300mm lens attached as that is what I use most times, and a whole lot of other stuff. To be honest though, the webbed bottle holder on the outside is useless and will be the first thing to tear so I don't even bother using it. I hiked with it in the bergs and it held up very nicely.

So that is my recommendation to you and @Brawler .
