Canon vs. Nikon.

Ah! the age old debate - good one!
As most people have pointed out they're both top notch and preference is fairly subjective ...oh and just to stir: Leica M8 FTW!!!! :):):)
$5,495.00 for a glorified point and shoot (:p) heck no!
With the launch of the 40D the 30D is still available and can be had for a bargain.
$800 body only from B&H Photo.

They do its the dial on the top.

I just realised I might have misinterpreted what you wrote. If you select one of the picture modes, or Av/Tv etc, can you still override ISO? I just checked on the Pentax. I have ISO set to 200 - doesn't matter what I set the dial to, it sticks to 200.

I listen to a couple of podcasts

Which ones? I haven't spent too much time searching but the handful I've tried so far was too much fluff for the time it takes to get through them.

but I dont read any photography mags - any that you can recommend?

Sigh... Not really. I'm not saying there's nothing in these mags - I pick up little tips here and there, and some of the articles are good. I'm just lamenting the fact that most most magazines seem to concentrate on fixing bad photography with Photoshop instead of taking good pictures to start with. I tend to lose interest halfway through the magazines. The same goes for a lot of photography courses.

I guess I'm the exception rather than the rule. I read all the bitching and moaning about AF this and AF that on the forums. Why the hell not learn to use the focus ring. There was a photographer my dad knew who spent a lot of time doing bird/wildlife photography in his "spare time." I remember being amazed at his almost mechanical precision - he never turned the focus ring more than once and his pictures were pretty much always spot on. Practise makes perfect...

On my canon the ISO is AUTO in the [-]idiot[/-] basic modes and manual in the 'creative' modes.
