Can't access Google owned website's/services

Hey everyone, just signed up to see if I could get some help from anyone here.

For the last 3 weeks I have not been able to access Gmail.com, Blogger.com or Youtube.com. And, as far as I'm aware, they're all Google sites.


I've tried doing everything that I know of to fix the problem, but just can't come right. I've even tried uninstalling Internet Explorer and re-installing it - that didn't work. No Google services want to work in Mozilla FireFox either.

I don't know what to do :(

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance :)
 
Just to get some more info first:

I take it other international sites work fine?
Does google itself work?

See if you computer is resolving the server names correctly. Can you ping mail.google.com?
 
All international site's work fine, Google works perfectly.

Hmm, how do you ping a site? :o

I assume you're on Windows ... Start->Run type cmd, press OK
In the command promt that appears type:

ping mail.google.com


What is the error you're getting when trying to browse those sites?

When I ping mail.google.com, I get a reply and it says that I sent 4 Packets and received 4 packets. Packet's lost: 0. And it used 32 Bytes of data.

Error message: IE cannot display the webpage;

Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

Peder, yes I can connect to eBay.

Open this folder:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
Right click your host file and select open with notepad, check the content of the file and see if there's any line inside that's related to the site you mentioned.

If not, just close and do not save any changes. If yes, delete those lines, save and exit.

I did that and found Youtube there, deleted it and now it works. Thanks for that! It's just that Gmail and Blogger aren't on that list and they're still not working.
 
Couldn't access gmail from my home PC this morning. It doesn't get pass the login page.
Trying it at work now and it's working but it's extremely slow. Could just because it's lunch time though. I'll try tonight again.

A good start is to make a copy of that file (backup) then empty out the whole file. Emptying wont break anything just fix things. The backup copy however is if you want to put things back in 1 by 1.
 
Thanks to Paladinkz, cyberarmy, Tinuva and the other's who helped me with this problem.

I just cleared that whole folder out and everything is working properly now, including Gmail and Blogger. :cool:

Good to know it worked.

Reason I asked city_life to delete those lines related to his problematic sites, will not harm his system at all. As either previously someone or some program had specified a valid IP address at that time, for those websites, or some malicious program had specified a invalid IP to stop you going to those sites (eg. 127.0.0.1 local loop). Either way, once you delete the lines mentioned, your browser will automatic use the correct IP from your DNS server and route you to the website.

It seems that

- the file 'hosts' from folder etc doesn't have any strings related to blogger or gmail.
- i've tried clearing all the contents of 'hosts' and the same thing occured. still cant open gmail and blogger


i can ping to google mail. 4 packets send and received.


help anyone?
 
i can connect to

ebay

facebook only the log-in screen. if i enter my email n pass and then click 'sign-in',

page cant display.

Do a tracert mail.google.com and copy/paste the contents here.

i've tried scanning thru the whole C partition (where my OS is located) and nothing unusual came up. (using avast anti-virus)

anyways, if i try opening mail.google.com using firefox version 3.5.2, it'll come out this thing
