I want to get a prepaid BlackBerry package from 8ta.

Should be easy right? Not so my innocent friends :).

Until you've called 8ta's call centre, you haven't truly experienced life as a customer in SA :D.

First you have to enter a cell phone number. Since I want a new SIM and that option isn't there I enter a random cellphone number and get the option I want - Prepaid.

The agent initially responds with she doesn't know if 'this' exists, she taps a few keys and says okay she thinks they offer it.

So what is the price I request? Takes 2 minutes to find out. Comes back only to tell me price depends on the store.

So I say - what stores? I want to do it online with 8ta.

Wants another 2 minutes to find out if it can be done online. Still no price though.

Comes back okay she thinks it can. What is the price I ask?

Can I quickly go find out she retorts? No I say - I'll go to the website.

We end the conversation and we're both still not certain that I can get this service with 8ta - no real information has been shared besides that the price of something undefined will vary from store to store.

8ta may not be able to sell a mobile service but they did give me a few good chuckles today - thanks guys :p.

Consumerism fail.

If you want to purchase a product, you do it from a store. Not from the help desk/call center. To get a new sim, you go into a store, the best is the Telkom Direct one, and they will activate it for you, saves you oodles of trouble.

Just saying.

I know that now :D - you're spot on. Have to go to a store.

In retrospect not sure why I thought I could do everything online and then on the phone with 8ta. I thought it would be like a well-oiled ecommerce store - three clicks and I'd get what I needed.

Ah well you live and learn :).
