Hello all

im new here and will be new to adsl as well...

im hoping you guys will be able to assist me with some questions i have please

in this week still im planning on signing up for an adsl account as i just found out today that there are ports available on the exchange now. so im super happy about that after waiting almost 1 month for telkom

option 1: i would like to sign up for mweb's uncapped package or any other uncapped packages as i would like to download movies, series, apps etc etc

but what would you guys suggest?

option 2: was also looking at webafrica's 10gig package currently going at R349 all inclusive, i see cybersmart also has a special going for R299 on there 10gig package but its all sold out at present.

was reading alot of negative things about the uncapped packages hence me not knowing what package to take at the moment

im on some sort of a budget and would not like to spend more than R350 per month this including adsl line rental

my line speed would be 384kb...
i also require a modem will be connecting wireless (2x laptops)

i need all the help please guys im new to this

looking forward to your replies

cheers!!!!

I am with Cybersmart on the 15GB 384 package. Same price as the 10gb, but you don't get uncapped weekends, only 12:30 - 7am every night. I manage to download/use about 42gb a month on this package with my torrents starting at 12 every night and switches off at 7. Try this route if 42gb (give or take) would suffice, and you are patient like I am. One thing I will however say is get your own wireless adsl router and ask the isp you are joining for a month to month contract, so if you want to move you just have to give a months notice. I don't think you will be able to do month to month if they supply a router.

Billion / Netgear / Belkin Router

Uncapped options seems highly contended and causes some issues for some users.

you dont seem to give me a straight answer as you saying i must go for uncapped then you say theres issue

is there any specific model of the above routers you would recommend and would these routers come with filters or would i have to buy them from telkom

thanks for the reply btw;)

ADSL line through Telkom R133 but you also have to have a standard residential line as well so add another R131.
Check out DLink modems
Try www.openweb.co.za for packages
:)

In my opinion -

If you want to download stax of stuff then you need an uncapped service. If you want performance and a bit of download then go for a capped account. I prefer a capped account as I do not need to download all that much and would rather have the performance.

The routers do change over time and the one I have - Billion 7404 has 2X SIP/ Phone ports that allow me to make calls over the internet at a fraction of the Telkom cost. You can plug a normal phone into the back of the router and it fails over to the normal telkom line if he ADSL is down for some reason. I think this router has been replaced with another newer model though.

This router also allows for static routing - so I can route downloads to a cheap uncapped account and all other browsing via a capped (faster) account.

My setup before I went 4MB:

384kb line from telkom - R152 (excluding line rental)
uncapped Mweb - R219
downstorm - R89

= R460 (excluding line rental)

This is more than your R350pm but it depends on your net usage really, I mean if youre going to download alot of stuff then this would be your best bet. If you dont download so much then I would scrap the downstorm, although it is an amazing product.

This setup allows for a constant full line speed download, and worked so well for me that I decided to bump up my linespeed to take advantage of the constant full line speed (80-90GB per month).

this sounds like a brilliant idea thanks man.... im highly considering this option now

would of actually loved the weekender package but they sold out

btw what is your download speeds like

i plan on getting my own wireless router as i dont want to be tired down in a contract i read many replies on this forum that says never sign a contract so i WONT sign one ;)

correct i wont be able to do month to month and get a "free" router

Thank again for the reply Bosvark

i dont wanna download stax of stuff but from time to time if i feel like downloading a few big things i would like to have the pleasure there of hence me asking my question whether i should go uncapped or just get a biggish capped account.

but i understand your logic and it makes sense to rather get a biggish capped account which im going to get rather cause i would rather want a bit of performance as you stated over a huge amount of space/gigs

wow i didnt even know this of router about the static routing this is... thanx there i learnt something new again

if im not mistaken i think telkom was selling the same router you mentioning here i saw it lastnight in the telkom store.

thanx cartier

i am aware of the two cost and have taken this into account im not worried about the standard line rental as that was always being paid

will look into these dlink modems is there any specific model maybe

thanx jpr

i dont think i need that much of a sophisticated adsl setup just yet hahahahaha, maybe in the later future i will look at something like this but thanx for your advice though, will definitely look into this for bigger downloads, i think for now i just need to get setup and running with an okish size account and then go from here...

plus i would much prefer getting my line rental and adsl account from one isp less account to worry about

conclusion

so my conclusion is...

i'll be taking the Night Rider Bundle - 15gig account through cybersmart which includes the adsl line rental of 384kb for R299 per month (month to month) as well as free cap usage from 12:30am - 7am every night

i think its a great deal cause it gives me flexibility of a capped account as well as a sort of uncapped account if that makes sense at all hahahaha plus it falls below my budget of R350 which makes it even more superb.

whats your guys take on this one?

and now i still have to go modem/router hunting

whats an ok price to pay for a wireless router today?

I tgink that since mweb's upgrades will be done this weekend that you should rather get uncapped.
