Hi everyone

hope someone here can help me. i cant sync at 4096. I'm syncing at 2mb basically. i live VERY close to my dslam and I've spoken to a Telkom guy who knows where i live and where my dslam is and he says it cant be anything but my router. I'm running the standard Telkom 100wr. problem is, I've tried a different router once before and it made my connection WORSE. has any1 had this before?

i would just like to know if the right router would solve this problem. im happy with my 200kbps but would actually like to get the 400kbps im suppose to be gettin.

thanx in advance for any help you guys can offer.

i've got the same problem. my connection was running @ 4096k and one day my line just went dead for a couple of days. after i had the telkom guy at my house and the exchange, he fixed the dead line but my speed has never been the same. i had a telkom guy at my house the other day again, for 5 hours! he just couldn't get the problem. i change my router from a D-link to a Billion and still nothing has changed...

Phone 0800375375 maybe they can pick something up ? Hopefully you can get a helpful person ....

Chances are that your cable was broken somewhere along the line. He patched it, but patches in cables means losses. :-(

One more.... was syncing at 3Mbit (quite far from exchange), line went dead one evening, came back quite soon after actually (20 mins or so) but could not sync anymore. After countless phone calls the speed was dropped to 1024 and magically I sync again. Problem seems to be with the upload speed, SNR for upload is at 6 and only getting 440kbps upload while download speed at 1024kbps shows SNR of 17... After a lengthy time on the phone again it apparently has something to do with a line imbalance blablabla. No fixing though, if you can sync at 1024 then Telkom's job is done.

StraightJacket: post your line attenuation and SNR margins here - which can be found on the router's web interface. I'm not 100% sure if that old Telkom router can show it, but my guess is that it can.

Simply because you live close to the DSLAM doesn't mean that the cables go straight to it. It's also possible that you're connected to another DSLAM that is further away!

@pada
I'm not sure what it should be, but it seems like my line attenuation is 44 for downstream and 28 for upstream. SNR margins look to be 7 for upstream and 14 for downstream.

And i know I'm connected to that DSLAM because I found that out from telkom. i asked them where im connected and how far my connection is (with the line). not sure how i got it cuz i was told once but since then no one seems to be able to tell me anymore. but that one guy told me I'm less than 2km away from the exchange.

Had the same issue called Telkom DSL and they did a reset from their side which reset it back to 4mb.

If you're less than 2km away from the DSLAM, then your line attenuation should be lower. You should definitely be able to connect at 4Mbps with those Line Attenuation values!
So if a reset at the DSLAM doesn't fix the issue, I would suggest that you try a different ADSL modem. Try to borrow an ADSL modem before buying one if you can.

Netgear routers usually struggle to sync at high speeds in poor conditions, where as the D-Link, Marconi & Siemens modems have a fairly good reputation under poor conditions :)
I'm a fan of the D-Link DSL-2500U (costs R300 or less), but it doesn't have wireless and it has only 1x 100Mbps connection.

thanx pada. i luckily got 2 buddies in the IT business that could hook me up with a modem. ima try what i can and get back on here.
