I reinstalled Windows on my laptop a few weeks ago and never got round to activating it online during the 30 day 'trial' period. I need it tomorrow for my trip so I boot it up, realise this and figure I'll have to do it over the phone. The first number they provide for SA 'doesn't exist' and the second gives a pre-recorded message about the number having changed. I dial the 'new' number but there is no answer; also as if no such number exists.

I then look on their website for a number in SA to call, and eventually, after much hunting find one. I dial it but it gives me the message 'number invalid'. I don't know what the problem here is, but I need this machine for my trip tomorrow and I don't have time for Microsoft's lack of customer service.

I don't give a sh*t about their anti piracy stuff. But for the record, mine is a totally legit copy but now I'm rewarded my having to waste my time when I'm very busy. They don't give a damn about their 'African' consumer base to provide decent service but they want to prosecute people here for pirating their software?

If anyone can help me sort this out, it's much appriciated.

Can't really help out with activating Windows... However as an alternative, you could use one of many Linux LiveCD's to atleast get basic file access, internet, email, etc..

Try that number and you'll hear an indistinguishable message by a woman with a Scottish accent giving the 'new' number.

Can't understand what they want. All I have is the code printed on the Windows sticker. Can't I do this without needing a f*cking science degree?

You go to the 'Activate Windows' thingy in your start menu and go from there .....

Follow the prompts and type that number in, in batches of five, the lady will then read it back to you. Then it will generate a number that you type in, which she will in turn read to you....

Download the activation crack and use it. If you have the license you're legal and have nothing to fear.

What about the letters? How do I enter those?

I agree with using the crack. If time is critical then crack the OS. You can always do a proper re-install later once you have the time.

Ok, where do I download the crack and how does it work? Remember, I can't do anything on that laptop at the moment.

Time can't be that critical that you can't do the 10 minute procedure ...

Letters?? Thats your CD key for installing. Working from memory but when you select to activate you have two options, phone and internet? Which is another good point; why not just use the internet option??

I have no internet connection on there! I think I was able to connect via 3G with my phone, but the Windows thing gave me the 'servive anavailable' message.

IIRC, after the 30 days has gone, it will still let you activate (I stand to be corrected) and if you can't do anything on the lappie, then a crack isn't gonna cut it either no?
