But Tassidar, do you carry the battle jacket, as I remember you have another backpack. I need place to put the third. Maybe I can make an addon to the battle jacket!:cool:, oh yes and add all the refelectors like gdiza:rolleyes: That means I have 5kg of water, 1.5 kg of medical equipment, a 1.2kg foldup shovel and another 2kg of clothing ans 1kg of tools. This is becoming a heavy lift! :sick:
 
Hi everyone... I'm new to this site. have just finished reading all the posts - WOW! I live in Bizweni area and have been amazed at how quickly this fire has "taken over". With all the worries about the wind and cloud coverage tomorrow, is there anything I can do to help? Last time I fought in a fire was in the 80's (bush fire in Kariba, Zimbabwe). I can semi freeze a couple of 2l bottles of water and bring out food. What is best? And what is generally the ratio of vegeterians fighting out there?
 
Hello Ketelletje. As long as the fire does not flare up lower down, there is not much to be done in the Helderberg area. I think the concern is whether the fire is out close to Lourensford is the biggest question?! The rest is very high up in the mountains and you do not want to go there and fight a fire without proper training and equipment. Add to this a strong SE then it becomes a problem. The problem is that Lourensford and Vergelegen does not allow general public on their property. This is to keep numbers of people to a minimum. No logic there. In the past they used all available helpers. PS Our unit has 2 vegetarians out of 150, but I think the Fire Brigade has a smaller ratio. You just have to increase your protein intake if you wish to help out anywhere. The 2 with us do.

Wow today the smoke is real bad - I counted 25 hotspots on AFIS at 12h30!!! Can't see where the fires are from the ground, but we had a champ dogshow in Constantia and there was smoke there even, but nothing like Somerset West.

It was far too hot today even at 7am. I have swum in the reservoirs but even in hot weather the water is usually too cold to stay in for any time, dogs don't seem to mind.

Smoke is finally starting to clear, I can now see the mountain from Claremont/Newlands area.

Yeah the dogs love it. :D In fact one of my friend's dogs found her love for swimming up there. Was quite strange.
 
I had to go shopping with my wife after I got home Sunday morning from the fire! :eek:

HAHA! Shame buddy... but hey, I'm sure she deserves it, she must worry about you alot while you're on the fire line, actually, I should call her and tell her not to worry, especially when I'm there - you're safe with me.

Except when you sleep and you snor... then I just wanna kick you outta the land rover!!!!!!!!!!!

I was so tempted to take the radio and put your snoring out to all the VWS members... you lucky I didn't ;)

Oh, I took photos which I uploaded to Flickr, but I didn't take as many photos this time around, I really was kept rather busy at the fire.
 
Ok, I have nazal problems! Thats all! :o Besides after the stuff we tended to on Saturday night, can you blame me for a blocked noze! :D

No, I can't... but I am still freaked out bout how FAST that dry grass went up... I've never had to run from a fire, well, not exactly run, but move back all the time, because we couldn't kill it... was crazy!

Another fire, another lesson learnt ;)
 
Yesterday afternoon at 1/4 to 4 the temp at the bottom of Sir Lowry's was 39.5!!!! I really feel for you guys helping with the fires...thanks for all the efforts so far. Today there is no wind so please lets hope they can be put out as much as 'put out' means they will not flare up again on Wednesday when the SE is predicted to be back!!! This is way beyond a joke now!!!

Talking about a rain dance... haha... one of the guys from the Nature Conservation Corporation was joking about that...

You know why it's called a rain dance and why people do it and say it works?

It's because people don't stop dancing till it rains... come no rain, or come rain, people will dance till it rains.

:D haha.
 
Someone also said that ontop of Sir Lowry's that when it was blowing (gusting) it hit 100km/h or something like that.
