Cape Town Fire/Smoke Alert Thread

Is VWS still closed for applications ?

JacquesD, you missed the boat and then some!

This year's intake of new recruits has basically finished their training for this coming fire season, Saturday and Sunday they did their MTO course (which they have to legally do before they can fire fight)

You're going to have to wait till next year for the next intake.

Rather large fire on Sir Lowry's Pass last night. Amazingly, just as I got worried, the wind died down and about two hours later the worst appeared over. Pass was closed for ages and I have never seen so many fire engines in one place in my life before - was a lesson learned during the last fire season? I do sincerely hope so!

A big thank you to all who fought the blaze last night.

There is a fire in Hout Bay currently.

That's all I know, I am not at it because I'm at work.

VWS is on route or already there.

Hi all,

There is a fire currently going in Hermanus side of the world.

I've received a few SMS's about it, a friend even sent me 2 MMS pics.

However, it is THAT side of the world so they have to formally request the VWS before we'll go.

Apparently, we have not been requested... "YET"

I'm also not sure of the fires' status (under control or not) so don't ask me, I really don't actually know much except that there is a fire there.

Just thought I'd let you punks know ;) before I get more PM's and such.

We’ve got a fire in De Doorns also.

Eish, that looks hectic - hopefully no damage to any property.

Hi all,

I'm back, got back at 1pm today, VWS sent out a 2nd time to replace us.

This fire reminds me so much of Vergelegen (the fire that happened a few months ago in the Stellies/Somerset West area)

I took alot of photos, they'll be viewable on my Flickr soon.

I saw a house go up in flames, we tried to stop it, but *sigh* we couldn't.
That was horrible!

It sounds like it was huge, News24 are saying that 40 000ha has been burnt - similar to that of the Stellenbosch/Somerset West fire earlier this year, but that one burnt for 6 weeks.

Cape Agulhas - One person has been injured in veld fires that have ravaged parts of Cape Agulhas in the Overberg Region, the fire department said on Sunday.

"One person is in the Intensive Care Unit [in hospital] after being seriously injured... They were caught in the fire," said Chief Fire Officer Reinard Geldenhuys.

Nine structures, including three homesteads and six surrounding buildings were destroyed in the fire.

About 40 000ha of land were destroyed.

Geldenhuys said that the fire started on Thursday at 23:00 in the Buffelsjag region. It was contained until a wind change caused it to spread again on Friday.

"After another wind change it ran quickly to [Cape] Agulhas."

Geldenhuys said by late on Sunday morning the fire was contained.

"There is one helicopter doing waterbombing," he said.

I'm uploading the pictures now, but because Neotel is as shyte as it is, it's uploading 10 or so files then dying, so I have to disconnect and reconnect.

Anyways, over 150 photos :) I'll label them accordingly.
