Ok, seriously now - get a clue!

When you are driving on a highway or dual carriageway (if you don't know what that is, go redo your learners and drivers license), you KEEP TO THE LEFT AT ALL TIMES!!!! IT IS THE LAW!!!

You are NOT (please read this word 15 times: NOT) allowed to sit in the right hand lane AT 70km/ph! You HAVE to move over!

Left - Driving
Right - OVER TAKING ONLY!!

Omfg, what don't you lot get about it?! FFS!

And truckers .. omg, don't even let me get started on the way you idiots drive .. 26 wheeler sitting in the RIGHT LANE at 60km/ph .. really? come on now.

Turning right in a STRAIGHT ONLY lane ACROSS a STRAIGHT and RIGHT-Turn lane?! W-T-F?! How retarded can you actually be!?

Seriously Cape Town, Get A Clue!

* I understand that some of you may actually drive like you give a **** and drive properly, but the majority of Cape Town drivers don't have the faintest idea what they hell they are doing.

No wonder there are so many deaths on the roads.

Please bro, calm TFD. I drive in Cape Town and can honeslty say the driving there is not as bad as its made out to be. I found that generally if you're coming at speed, someone "hogging" the right hand lane will move across- if its safe to do so.

Had an almost bad experience on the N7, just before Parklands some years back when people driving their big 4X4's tried pushing me off the road in my Tazz. If you know that road, you'll know that its badly lit and only has one lane in either direction....any fukk ups at 120km/h, you'll roll your car and end up in a ditch on the side of the road

Look i fully sympathise with Sabbz, but unfortunately ive learnt that driving in CPT like one would drive in JNB just doesnt work. The stress comes when trying to drive fast in cpt, just dont do it. I agree that there seems to be a lack of driving common sense here, but i have noticed this in other cities as well, so CPT is not the only place. Just stay clear from the idiots, and dont get urself worked up, chill out and find another route. Ull live longer and remain healthier than if you stress urself out about this the whole time. Ive stopped and it helps.

My post is called a vent. I needed to vent some built up anger (instead of taking it out onto the roads, haha! :p). But now that I've vented, I'm calm. :)

Almost every single day that I drive to work, I get stuck behind some bugger who refuses to move out of the right hand lane. In 9/10 cases, if they DO move out of the way, they do it when I've already driven up behind them and had to slow down.

Besides which, they shouldn't have to move over because they shouldn't be IN that lane in the first place. It's for overtaking. Some circumstances I'll allow (such them overtaking someone), but others are just being knobs. The ones I'm referring to are the tits that are driving slowly in the right lane, when the left lane is empty.

It may not be as bad as some make it out to be, but it is bad. The stuff I was venting about happens almost daily - either to me, or around me.

GP drivers are no where near the best drivers in the world but they're a right side better than cape town drivers. I've had more road-rage outbursts in one month in cape town, than I did in over a year in jozi. :p

It gets discussed on Cape Talk 567 all the time. Bottom line is that it's just a quirk in Cape Town.

According to 567 the law is that you HAVE to give way to people behind you as long as it is safe to do so. Even if the person behind you is speeding you are not allowed to prevent them from passing.

When I moved to CPT 10 years ago from JHB is was probably the single biggest adjustment to driving here. IN JHB people just move over. In CPT when you see a GP plate the driver will move over 99 times out of 100. I used to flash my lights at folks in the right hand lane to get them move move. Mostly they move over and give you a dirty look as you drive by (I would give a happy smile and wave back). Sometimes they ignore you and drive slower. Once the driver in front waved his gun at me and refused to move over.

CFM plates (in my opinion are the worst). Never move over and always drive well below the speed limit.

There have been a few callers to 567 that claim it is hangover from Apartheid. People used to drive like that to annoy the rich people in fancy cars. It was shouted down as much as it was supported on the radio.

My issues where solved when I bought a 3.7L liter v6 Jeep. Driving fast doubles the fuel bill so now I drive everywhere with the cruise control set to 80 or 90 and I don't drive in the fast lane.

The law also states that you may not drive faster than 120 on the freeway, so why must someone move out of the right hand lane for a car doing 140+?

Any of you see that fatal accident on Plattekloof hill a while back? Was caused by a skedonk bakkie chilling @ <80kph in the middle lane. Some poor dude slammed right up his crack and ended himself.

That damn bakkie driver should be prosecuted for manslaughter! I know the problem is with you if you are coming from behind, but this is similar to a drink&drive situation, where no matter what the accident, you are in the wrong.

Anyway, the roadpigs need to up their game, lay off the speed traps and enforce some rules that would contirbute towards safer and more considerate driving.

There are too many losers of all description to get worked up though: traffic, queues, government, blah blah. The ones that put me in danger though, need to see my middle finger.

Depends on the road, in a way (not legally, no, but in practical terms). If the traffic is very slow moving, like on the M3 out of town at 17:00, hoping for a clear right lane is like hoping to win the lottery - it's not likely to happen.

If the lane is clear - yes, people should move over and not sit in that lane. But most people, if they are sitting in the lane, will move over if they see someone coming up behind them.

Also, you mention people doing 70km/h - what is the speed limit on the road you're talking about it? Many roads (like the M3) have a speed of 80, and I have to say that while I am in the wrong legally, I hate moving over for people who are speeding. If I have to obey the law, so do they. (Of course, if you're talking about the N1 or the N2 where the speed limit is 120, and people are sitting in the right hand lane doing 70, then I totally agree with you).

If I drive 120 in the right hand lane, and car comes from behind at speeds in excess of mine I just wont move left just to get stuck behind slower cars.

I have had the same driving experience when living in CT, Sabbz. They have no idea how to use a highway. Who drives at 60 on a highway??? I'm glad to be back in Jhb just so I don't have to deal with the roads in CT anymore...

It's not that I'm driving fast (120 max), it's mostly because they're driving very slowly, lmao. Or at least, to be fair, a hell of a lot slower than JHB drivers. :)

I experience these problems mostly on the M5 (I work in Wynberg, driving from Milnerton), although I have noticed it occasionally on other highways and normal roads.

No I know Cape Town isn't the only place (I wasn't implying it was btw :)), I've heard of a lot more worse places (many of them outside RSA - showing that SA drivers are not THE worst in the world, as many of us believe, lmao).

I can't take another route because it's the shortest and lightest on fuel, and my GPS takes me through residential areas which I would rather avoid. So I'm stuck travelling the M5, except in March when the company moves to Sea Point then I'm really going to have a field day with traffic, lmao. :p

Because 9/10 these people aren't doing 120, their doing 80 - which is what my real gripe is about :)

The myth of the fast lane. I harp on about it all the time.

There is always some loser chilling in the middle lane at or below the speed limit. This prevents someone like yourself from moving into the middle lane when I would like to pass in the fast lane. I cruise around at about 130, just under what the speed at which the cameras nail you (if the whole 10%/10kmph leeway thing holds).

I now tend to cruise down the left lane, away from the loser in the middle and the average joe who has been forced into the fast lane. This is faster, but more dangerous, and I do not like to do it, but it works for me.

During heavy traffic, I'm OK with it.

The highway (m5) speed limit is 80-100 km/ph and these turds are doing 70-80 km/ph in the fast lane when the speed limit is 100, and 50-60 when it is 80.

I've done this several times, usually when I'm in a hurry. But I think it's illegal to overtake in the left lane, so I try to avoid it as much as possible. :p

That has been my experience on the M5 too.

EDIT: Admittedly, I was driving 120 in a 100 zone (where there were no cameras :D). I don't mind being behind someone driving the speed limit, though.
