You need to give way to other cars because they could be involved in an emergency. The law is (according to the several discussions on the radio) that you MUST give way even if the car behind is speeding. Their speeding is a separate offense and is illegal but the law treats it as separate acts.

Would you really like to be the cause of someone dying on the back seat of a car trying to get to hospital because you're driving at the speed limit and they need to get past?

I think if you are speeding because it's an emergency you have to have your brights on and your hazards on don't you?

Ofc there are circumstances and events and other things that get taken into account (speeding, reckless driving etc) but written down in it's basic form the law regarding highways is: "Keep left, overtake on right."

I am open to correction on this next statement: I think this also applies to roads with more than one lane traveling in the same direction.

No I know Cape Town isn't the only place (I wasn't implying it was btw :)), I've heard of a lot more worse places (many of them outside RSA - showing that SA drivers are not THE worst in the world, as many of us believe, lmao).

I can't take another route because it's the shortest and lightest on fuel, and my GPS takes me through residential areas which I would rather avoid. So I'm stuck travelling the M5, except in March when the company moves to Sea Point then I'm really going to have a field day with traffic, lmao. :p

You unfortunately have the ****test drive to work ever.
And I dont think one can compare drivers in JNB and CPT. Think of it as an education. JNB drivers get a different education in driving because of the size firstly, and the mass expanses of road which encircle the city. These roads have multiple lanes and can easily cater for loads of taffic. Drivers in JNB have more space to move around, hence why people drive faster, people let others through or pass, and are just more observant. Purely because of the state of road infrastructure up there.
CPT has got *** roads, with no more space to move. We have a max of two lanes in the same direction. With a growing population people are getting greedy for road space, hence the tempers, and amounts of stupid drivers. The stupid drivers are just oblivious because they can be, there is no more space for them, sometimes they end up in the wrong lanes and just want to stick it to the people who drive fast. If we had the same kind of roads as JNB our drivers would be the same. but we dont.

Yes you need to put you hazards on and yes the law says keep left pass right, but my point is I'm not giving way when I'm busy passing in right hand lane at 120 and some idiot comes from behind at 140+ and expects me to give way to just get stuck behind the slower cars.

The heading shows that I was talking to Cape Town; at no point did I imply Cape Town is the only city in the world whose drivers drive like this.

I was talking TO Cape Town, because I live IN Cape Town - why would I bitch about other cities that I don't live in?

I don't disagree. I'm just giving what the law says and how it is interpreted by the various legal people and police representatives they've had on the radio.

The law says, no matter what, you must give way to traffic approaching from behind if it is safe to do so.

The speed limit in the 'slow' / left lane is also 120kms so you could drive at that speed there and be well within the law too.

Ok, I understand your statement now - and I will agree. I won't move out of the way for someone that is speeding while I am busy overtaking either.

Just gets to me when people stay in the fast lane, driving slowly. :)

Totally agree! ... but I noticed that the N1 outbound near the M5 off ramp is now 4 lanes wide. Pretty cool that the changes are being done so quickly in my opinion.

Yes, Cape Town does have a lot of k@k drivers. But the amount of k@k drivers from out of town are even more staggering, with their attitude of "change your driving habits to suit me."

On Sat, while driving on the M5, I overtook a string of cars doing 80-100kmph. I was doing 120. 2 cnuts from Dbna and EC came up behind me doing easily 220. They were on my arse before i could pass the string of cars I was overtaking. Am i supposed to then risk my own life and those of others, by swerving into the slow lane at 120?

I say they should go kill themselves in their own towns and leave us with our k@k driving habits if they don't like it.
