Several towns and suburbs in the Western Cape have been plunged into darkness tonight and are likely to experience power cuts tomorrow morning following a controlled shutdown of the Koeberg nuclear station's unit one.

Fani Zulu, the Eskom spokesperson, says operators took the unit on a controlled shutdown following an electrical fault in the supply to some other parts of the station. Zulu says this resulted in an immediate deficit of 900 megawatts of electricity and subsequent load shedding, which is likely to carry on tomorrow.

"We subsequently had to introduce load shedding for about 300 megawatts or so. We have contained the situation in the Western Cape and I must say the situation is confined to the Western Cape for now," Zulu says. We are introducing load shedding and it will be based on the schedules that we have already published:rolleyes: , Zulu added.

It takes about 5 days to get that sucker on-line again.
Going to be some very unhappy business people tomorrow and this coming week end.

N1 City and abouts was out earlier this evening as well.
Eksdom came around bout 2 weeks ago and replaced all our bulbs with energy saving jobbies.

Well that is the least of my worries.

I have a rather beefy gate motor to haul the extra long heavy gate for our driveway and thus it cannot use a battery backup system.

Since we don't have a pedestrian gate onto to our property (another real smart move from yours truely :() so when the power goes and we get home out I have climb into a tree to get over our wall to manually open the gate.

Try doing that in the rain :(.

luckily I got a manual override for both my driveway gate and pedestrian gate, just override with a key
or I can scale me wall after putting on me glow-in-the-dark catsuit :D

What new scheme was that Toad? Saw someone (dominic, BTTB?) mention something about powerlines as well - something new out there?
 
I think Toad was referring to the new power grid that has been in the works for the last couple of years. It is basically a system where al the municipal unicities will be hooked up to a 'central' power grid.
Toad can confirm.

BTTB methinks were referring to the power failures that were being caused by all the veld fires in CT at the time, with the smoke and ashes on the high voltage power lines.
 
Aah, thanks lilDeath - have seen some info on this - didn't realise it meant rearranging the wires so to speak.

Indeed, the way I understood it, it is quite a significant change with potentially huge impact.
 
Map loads for me - but totally dumb - why they need your exact house location I wouldn't know - and in the end tells you nothing anyway.

And I know fully that nothing will change with my mad whittering here but i figure that the PTB knew a LONG time ago about the problems at Koeberg but put it on hold until the timing was right for the Municipalities to begin linking us all up. It IS an excellent way to cover up the powercuts while the crews do the
actual physical work safely. Sabotage at Koeberg? heheh nicely melodramatic that was.... I dont dispute that Koeberg is in a right mess but have to wonder how long they stalled fixing it just to get the overall timing right.
And the BigBrother thing? pffft... i have absolutely nothing to hide - I just foresee corruption in the country reaching new heights (or would that be depths?) So much more info going to be available to some of the dodgiest characters erk.... *shrugs

No toad - BEE is the only culprit. And the "SABOTAGE" bolt of course (on the eve of an election) - anybody notice how we haven't heard anything since??!!

SABC News is once again on the ball.
It was the first on-line media reporter to announce the shut down of Reactor One on Thursday and the first to note it's return to service.
