Free WiFi for Cape Town trains

Metrorail in the Western Cape is rolling out free Wi-Fi internet access at train stations, with plans to push connectivity onto the trains themselves.

Eh?

They must rather leave this idea and get the trains running on time!

Running......on time. I would take running first.

have they replaced all the windows already? talk about backwards priorities.

I'd also prefer a Khronos-worshipping train service, over a Balor-worshipping one.

... I predict it will not be Free. You will have to sell your right to anonymous usage before logging in.

I can see more people using their tablets on the trains, resulting in more thefts of tablets on trains.

It's a really superb idea. Commuters (even the low end of the market) are increasingly picking up smartphones and they will have the option to empower themselves whilst commuting

how will you use that smartphone when you packed into that carriage like a sardine though? sort out operational issues before you get the add-ons.

“The next phase would be to get the Wi-Fi on board the trains. They (commuters) will then be able to track a train’s performance while on board. So if a train stops in the middle of nowhere we would then be able to know why the train is standing still.”

The commuters will be very impatient before the time if the train arrives late

Internet > train windows.

Yes, because train Linux will not break

Hey, improvement is good. Not that they should not improve the trains, but it is the same as saying we should not upgrade Cape Town airport just because there are shacks across the road.

WiFi is only useful when you wait at the station in the morning and need to check why the train is late, then they give the same generic excuse lack of sets, or sun and the moon are not aligned correctly.

I did this just this morning.

On a serious note I've seen people working on their laptops/tablets on the train so it's not a totally bad idea.

Yeah, free wifi so you can let your boss know that the train is late. :erm:
