Hmmm I got some fun toys yesterday at work, managed to find asus mini access points with 2 internal antennas that I'm gonna be ripping apart to see if you could connect a larger antenna. They're only 802.11b but these things are only going for something like R245 ex VAT!!!! And they can function as wireless bridges to extend the range of a signal, sweetness ( http://www.asus.com/products/communication/wireless/wl-330/overview.htm ) these things are like the size of a packet of cigarettes.

Oh and Freeek, PoE stands for power over ethernet :P

well lee3d i stay almost next to the n1 at bill bezuidenhout got a buddy that lives a little bit further down about a KM. tell me how much its gonna cost to get a connection to you guys and we can arrange something. also got a buddy at the sanlam building apartments but he's only on the fourth floor and his building sup gets a hernia everytime someone mentions going on the roof to put an antenna up. too bad though.

Firstly you will never get 54mpbs or 11mpbs. We cap it down. A access point will not give all 64 users 54mpbs. Thats a Dream. Wireless doesnt work like that. We use a microtik linux router that we paid for. It works the best for management. Clean aps doenst work if you start copying, some people will die of the network. Traffic has to be managed.

We use senao. The 200mw ones. Its your choice. We use aps in client mode for link up and dishes. It works easy and is easy to install.

You can buy your 0wn equipment. No problem.
You phone me you talk to me, we discuss. Every site has its own challenges and problems.

We have a once of join fee of R500. Thats to cover the cost of the High site that is 7k.

I wasted 5k on my first wireless equipment, 2 years back. Wireless is NOT easy.
Sufferd 2years to get here. Its really worth it.

Thats only if you want to get connected. P2p is free. P2p is linked to your signal quality and strengh.

We not offering big internet at the moment. We dont like LYING to people about speeds.

We over 64k inet. Basically for internet browsing that is fast and Email @uitsiglan.co.za account. Downloads between 12:00 - 05:00 may burst to 16kb/s.

This R150 a month.

I've been playing with the same stuff lately and is in table view and belivile we have a con to one of the isp rpoviing wong range wifi They charge an arm an leg for a quipment the wifi fry should do 5km easyly

in fact with the new enhanced version of the cantena you might be able to get 5km since it provides about 12dbi gain has to be proven though we currently have some build to test over 1KM range and then we will extend further.
where di you get 802.11g usb adapts for under 200 ??

I'm very interesed in your project and will star psting my finings when i get my Can tenas back

Ok, u ppl seem to be forgeting one very important think, its called spectrum, do u ppl even know how cluttered the air waves are, and if any one mentions an omni, i fill be forced to blow it up. I am involved in setting up wireless links and have spent loads of money on this aswell. I have a crap load of wireless routers in my cupboard and they dont work in this interferance. The scanner that i used indicates between 6-8 wi-fi nodes running on a range of channels, and though one has 13 channels, only 3 to 4 of them are usable due to cross-talk between the channels. Omni antennas add to the problem cause thay radiate their energy all over the show, thus ppl have poor signal and are forced to boost the signal with amplifiers, this just makes it worse, cause it narrows the beam, and just causes a whole lot of noise. So stick to directionals and sectors. I will be running some test soon just to check the signal levels and noise levels, cause the bellville area has alot of it.

If you Love it let it go, if it comes back then it love you. If not hunt it down and kill it
 
I can vouch for that im sitting in bellville connecting to tafelsig and everyday there's drop in signal cause of interference. especially on saturday's and sunday's seems to be like the weather.

Mufasa, that's not likely to hapen it seems. Been trying now for bout a year to get ppl to register their nodes on nodedb but so far only bout 5 new nodes went up and i know their out there.


Also there are a lot of wisps in cape town. and im figuring these guys themselves are doing a good job of making the air congested like it is.
