Capitec Mastercard Debit Cards... interesting

Not in the slightest. They charge you R4.50 per month service fee per account unless you make it a fixed deposit. That amounts to losing 0.54% per annum on a balance of R10 000 so you can say you are still making 5.46% which is pretty good for a savings account. There are not many if any other savings accounts where the interest outweighs the monthly service fees.

Cool. Gonna do this tomorrow then. :-)

Just remember each month to transfer the interest out of the account to maintain you balance below R10 000.

With a fixed deposit, you can nominate whether the interest should accrue or automatically be transferred to another of your accounts, but with a savings account, you need to transfer interest out manually.

Also I was going to stay with Standard Bank as I had to buy a car (got my finance from Nedbank cheaper in the end) and want to buy my first house soon. Then a lot of people told me that being loyal to your bank is no guarantee of a home loan anymore.

Does one need to be with capitec to get a Virgin credit card?or do you guys just link it to the capitec acount to compliment it?

Schweet.tnx.some very interresting info here!atm i have an fnb student account that costs next to nothing, but thats gna end after this year.capitec+virgin looks like a good option.

I emailed Capitec about the debit master card yesterday and got the following reply:

Good Day

Thank you for your email.

Kindly note that we do have selected branches in the Western Cape ( Somerset Mall, Somerset Vineyard) who are issuing the debit Master card.
Unfortunately, there is no definite time frame as to when it will be rolled out country wide.

What's the difference between Maestro and MasterCard?

Maestro is debit card only...can only be used in ATM's and POS machines. MasterCard you can use for online transactions etc.

I also made the move from Nedbank to Capitec. Savings are huge!!! I use to pay over R300pm on service fees. Now I pay below R20 for everything! Including sms notifications! And I can draw money at the Pick n Pay next door. The only thing I miss is the online purchasing facility. Can't wait to get the MasterCard! Will it be international? I could use it to purchase overseas?

Mastercard is generally international.
However, there are other methods for shopping online, if you don't have a credit card.

How do I shop online without a credit card? Would love to know ... That's the only regret I have

I heard from one lady at Capitec that they are in the process of bringing out credit cards, that will apparently blow the others out the water, but they are being held back by the other banks.

No idea if any of this is actually true though...

Look at www.vcpay.co.za
It is a mobile application that allows you to create one time mastercards for online shopping.
So, if you want to purchase something from iTunes for $2.49, you create a MasterCard for that amount, and it will generate a card number etc for you. Once you have used that card, it can't be reused, even if stolen.
There was a thread created before regarding this product. Btw, it is free to use and you can deposit money into the virtual wallet via eft.

I've also started using it for telephone/take away orders, ever since my discovery card was used online for some fraudulent transaction.

if you don't have a smart phone, you can used standardbanks payd http://payd.net/where-can-i-use-it/

However this product is limited to certain online stores
