Capitec VS FNB thread

Until my spending pattern allows me to earn more in ebucks than the FNB monthly fee, I'm sticking with Capitec. I hardly use the account, but they pay the best interest on positive balances. My day to day is on my Virgin card, which I pay in full each month.

Once I spend more, I'll look at a credit card with a rewards programme.

If you're covering your FNB fees with eBucks, why do you need Capitec?

As far as I can see, moving some services over to Capitec would cause me to lose a little bit of money and opportunity (from reduced discounts etc.).

I get at least 8000 ebucks a month, that covers banking fees, fnb connect and im still left with some to use or sell, plus I cant remember the last time ive been to an FNB branch. For me it works out since i actually make more than I spend with the whole ebucks thing.

I for one am not advocating moving over to Capitec. Both banks have their good points for me:

Capitec: no fees on airtime purchases, FNB: charges on buying airtime

FNB: can open an account online in a jiffy (just make sure they do your KYC, know your client), Capitec: Can't open accounts online (excluding the sub accounts)

FNB: can buy lotto tickers with app, Capitec: can't by lotto tickets

Capitec: finger print authentication, photo of you on their screen in branch and OTP not linked to your SIM number (if your app in offline) FNB: OTP linked to your SIM number (if your app in offline)

FNB: ebucks, Capitec: no ebucks

I might make about 5000 ebucks a month with my swiping on level 5. My ~R40pm in effective Capitec fees won't bankrupt me either. I will do some adjustments and make it R20pm effective fees.

I was at my Capitec branch somewhere last year, to replace my dying dongle, which was 8 years old, with a new one. Can't even remember when last before that. In my 9.5 years with them, probably under 20 times in total.

I prefer security over convenience. That's why I have 2FA enabled aswell.

Guess you can see it from two sides.

Personally the more people are involved (branch) the less secure it becomes.

And all FNB clients have 2FA by default anyway. So hardly a difference there.

Neither, I want private banking, I want lounge access, I want a concierge.

I had a nightmarish one year experience with FNB (no card for a month + FICA requested with accounts and cards blocked while I was 10000kms away with a hotel to pay and a plane ticket to buy + 2 other FICA vérifications requested during the same year) and Capitec doesn’t offer any of this.

I realise this doesn't apply to everyone, but with FNB I can only draw R8k a day at an ATM. My Capitec limit is much higher.

Get it yourself at https://www.prioritypass.com/ and concierge banking is a joke anyway. Pay more just so you can receive the service you should have gotten in the first place.

This would only costs about 5300 rands a year + probably at least another 1500 of guest visits (that I have for free now).

Private banking costs me about 4800 and also gives me the concierge (the American Express one is far from a joke).

Without counting that I would need about 3 other service providers to do the things that 1 does very well so far.

So thank you, but no. Paying more to get and downgraded service, more paperwork, more debit orders, more potential issues and more people to deal with is not worth my time.

Yeah then this thread is not for you.

A quick peek at Amex.co.za suggests that its a standalone product, with only the platinum charge card with concierge service. So which bank offers private banking that includes the amex charge card?

With FNB the ATM Limit is R8000 at an ATM.

A few days ago I withdrew R25000 via Cash@tills.

FNB also have biometric verification. When I query things at FNB centurion they ask to put my finger down to verify who I am.

In my eyes, FNB is the bank in SA

They are not perfect, there isnt something like a perfect bank in my eyes, but they rank as #1

The rewards is a little perk (on how you spend). FNB helps me in WAY bigger and better ways

Nedbank, you get one Visa and one Amex card.

Closed my Capitec account a few yeas ago because I wasn't using it (and they actually suspended it because of that fact). At the time FNB had everything I needed including investment accounts like Share Saver (this was before the time the likes of Easy Equities was around and nobody really knew about Sygnia...before the "revolution" of cheap investing).

Anyway, apart from my Wesbank loans being directly linked to my online banking I don't have that much reason to stick around with FNB other than the fact that they've never screwed me over and with eBucks I essentially bank for free (get paid to bank actually). And the app... the app makes things pretty damn easy.

That said, if and when Discovery Bank comes online I'll give it serious consideration. I'm not to clued up with Capitec's current offering so might give that a look again but unless there is a MAJOR benefit in changing banks I don't see it happening at all.
