Dear All,

With ADSL, there was a definite contention issue with uncapped vs capped products. I am with CyberSmart on capped ADSL, very happy: I get my 5Mbps at any time, and do not go over my 500G day-time limit :-) All this for R650.

Vumatel have now Fibred us in Kensington, and I am looking at staying with CyberSmart, as I have been with them for ever, and they have always responded perfectly when required.

BUT:

20/20Mbps uncapped home R648
20/20Mbps 500G capped R899

*BOTH* say "You get 100% of your line speed at all times"

ie it seems to imply that the contention issue has gone away........ Which it can't.

Any insight appreciated.
I normally do about 250G max, but do have two teenagers...

Upfront costs? Vumatel? CyberSmart?

Alan.

Vumatel fibre is not the same as ADSL, and you don't have the same issues if you are on their trenched network.

What I will say is, STAY AWAY FROM ANY AND ALL ISP's THAT PROVIDE ADSL PRODUCTS WHEN YOU SIGN UP FOR FIBRE.

Again, if the ISP you are looking at, provides any ADSL product, just ignore them.

The reason for this is simple, all those ISP's is stuck in a way of thinking where they try to stop contention, by shaping and throttling. This is because they cannot have 2 different approaches, and then the consumer gets the short end of the stick.

Providers who focus only on fibre, will give you better, more consistent speeds, without having to worry about Shaping and throttling, which is an old outdated way of thinking.

Ahoy Alan,

Mr DERoestorf has the right view on choosing a provider. Please do not make a choice based on brand loyalty. It's not going to end well.

For the sake of your teenagers (and your sanity) just get a unlimited package from a proper ISP. Fibre is a different beast. Usage can climb quickly once Youtube automatically streams in FHD+, nevermind the movies & series :)

Also make sure you are clear regarding all the costs for the first 2 months. It can be expensive to get running.

There will always be contention, but that not the same thing as shaping or throttling.

I've been with Cool Ideas for a few months now and their uncapped service isn't shaped or throttled.

We used to have Cybersmart fibre at my old office, I was not impressed with it in the slightest.

Thank you all for some VERY good input.

It sounds to me that CoolIdeas is the way to go. But that DOES mean R1725 upfront for the CPE + + +, but I have seen some horror stories with the freebie ISP's.

You cant go wrong with cisp. Its only the Vuma installation that is now an extra R1760 (new 15%vat) and they have a 3 and 6 month payment option.

Can attest to CISP and the Vuma installation costs. Recently went through the signup and installation from Vuma and CISP.

What I can advise, order the line through Vuma directly and once you get the VT number from Vuma, go through the Vuma portal and order the package you want with CISP. Alternatively you can order the ISP package via the CISP client page (The way I went) and then get the VT number activated via the helpful support staff.
