I have been told that after you use up your cap, you don't get hardcapped, but your access slows down to 64k. Is this true?
Also, do you get charged for the additional usage after you have depleted your cap?

In theory you do get slowed down to 64kb/s, at no "extra" cost. But it also happens sometimes that you get shutdown completely, rectifiable by phoning iBurst and having it sorted

Well not really only in theory as if its some myth and half the people get that death by cap. It happens to very few people.

So yes you will get 64kb and at no extra cost, you can use it as much qas you want.

About 3 months back I thought I had fallen victim to death by cap. I couldn't access any web sites except for iBurst and secure http sites. I could also use VPN, but that was about it.

I PM'd Shaun who responded very promptly and he got a senior tech to phone me. The tech insisted that what was happening was not DBC but was a result of poor signal strength. I was very dubious but hooked up the modem to a router (it was on a USB cable previously) so that I could use a long ethernet cable to move it to potentially better locations. It worked - the problem went away and hasn't resurfaced. Shaun also offered to visit me on a weekend to help find the ideal spot for the modem - something I haven't taken him up on, but the gesture was much appreciated.

My signal strength wasn't good (fluctuated between ~-85 and -92db), but while I still had my bandwidth allocation the speeds were quite reasonable. Once I was throttled, however, only the previously mentioned services worked, but access to my bank through https was as fast as before - I was coming from a dial up environment though, so "fast" is a relative term. I thought I'd mention this in case any other new subscribers experience this, and also because I don't understand the logic behind this "pseudo" death by cap - can anyone enlighten me?

Many thanks.

I had the "death by cap" many times and I can assure you that I do not have a weak signal, but as you said a phonecall to Shaun and it's working again till the next time.
It's the bandwidth monitor that is messing up with some people but it seems to have been fine my side for the 2nd month now.

Mashu, I also had my first death by cap last month. I simply got an extra gig to sort it out. there might be other ways, but the techie also tried to tell me the same thing, that is was my signal, funny how Ive been capped before almost every month and it has always work with exactyl the same signal, yet suddenly my signal is too low to get anything to work at all once capped, going from having full 64kb or above.

I could not, like you, access anything o Iburst site or https, however I could ping any site fine. And websites looked as if they loaded but stayed empty, so DBC seems to be a little different to not having good enough singal to get capped speeds, which I hear is actually, like you say, a problem..

Hmm, maybe they reduce the signal to our UTDs when we reach our caps (to slow it down), hence the "weak signal" :D

EHV: It's all quite puzzling - you mentioning that you could ping sites but web pages would not load makes me wonder if changing the MTU (downwards, to what one would use with 64k dial up, I would think) might help in these circumstances.

My 3G bandwidth allowance lasts me for most of the month and I then use the throttled period to do a bit of eMuling - it's the only time it works for me - so I'm not tempted to buy extra bandwidth. But I guess if it's a case of buying more bandwidth or not having the service work at all then there's not much choice.

Thanks to all for your replies.

Well I am on the G1 package and this month I have already pushed it to 20GB.

I get the same speeds with torrents whether I am capped or uncapped it all the depends on the torrents, Ok maybe its a little bit slower but still works. And can do all the rest like email, browsing etc.
