i hate diesel.. but i said he should go for it for his needs
and you think 500k's of 45L's is bad, i have a 1.6, and struggle to get 500k's out of my 62L tank !!
what i would recommend, is keep the velo (puke)then start saving every month rather then buy a car in the 100k range when you have saved up enough !

100k is a long long way off for me. Doubt I could save more than R1000/month next year and that would be a stretch
