Hi all

I recently bought a new sound system for my car. All Pioneer. Including a new head unit, 230w 6 inch front speakers and a set of 400w 6x9s. So my question, why is it that when I turn it up a little there isdistrortion? Is it because the head unit (4x50w) is not powerful enough? Do I need an amp? If so what are your suggestions? If not then what is the problem?

Thanks:)

The short answer is yes, you do need an amp.

If you would like to just power the 6x9s then a small amp would do but if you plan to add a sub woofer later on, rather get a larger amp now.

In term's of brands, go for the well known ones. I prefer starsound. Also if you are running an amp, make sure you have a good battery and when its time to get a new battery, buy the biggest size your car can take without modification.

And also get it fitted by someone experienced and make sure they fit an inline fuse for the amp.

One last bit of advice, be careful, car audio can become an expensive hobby

Look at RMS wattage ratings. It's the clean power that the amp can produce before distortion.

Then get the best amp you can afford. I would advise a 4 channel amp. Run your mids off your head unit and use one channel for each of your 6x9s. Use the remaining 2 channels for a dvc sub.

Yup always check the rms, the wattage they usually advertise will be much higher than what you actually be getting.

that's my current setup, though you'll need a powerful amp for a dvc, as mentioned before it'll start costing a fair bit more than you would like.

Should have ditched the 6x9's and got a monoblock/2 or 4 channel amp and a sub.
