I need to get a car but will be paying cash, no finance, so only have between 30k - 40k to spend.
Would it be daft to get a 10 year old BMW? There are quite a few in that range - they are cool because they have everything, full house, but are they expensive to maintain even if you service them not at BMW?

What other FH cars are available in that price range - I had a look on autobay and not much there, actually a bit dismal in that price range.

Any luck finding the car? Try Alfa Romeo 156

for that price you can get a 99-01 corsa with about 90-110k on clock...

...for bmw etc, it will probably be around a 96-99 model with 130k + on the clock

so allthought the beem has more comforts, it might be hard to find one that is pretty decently looked after. and running costs will certainly be higher

Golf Mk III GTI Exec 2.0
Pro's: Quick, comfortable, looks decent, cheap, high-mileage engines
Cons: Old, expensive to run (thirsty car, you'll probably buy coils by the dozen), old, not really very safe, quite hard to find one that has been really well looked after, and even harder to find one with decent mileage

Rather go for a civic then a tazz since the tazz is 80's technology with a new face, the civic is more safe, modern and better looking ! If you go the civic route dont buy a vtec though since most of them are mutilated already but a 160i is a nice buy and they usually retail between R36 and 50k for 96-98 models.

They are nice, but parts and services cost plenty.
A 10 - 12 year old Civic, can turn out to be pricey.

I had one (a 97 vtec though) it wasnt that expensive to maintain (i did blow the engine once and that worked out about R3500 to get it fixed but in the 6 years i've had the car i didnt spend alot on mechanical repairs at all (except for the regular service intervals which worked out about R500 - R600), the only other thing that broke was the electric window switch on the driver side which i replaced with a R400 second hand one, which worked just as good as a new one ! civics also keep a good resale value !

livid Also try to look @ the mazda mx6 which is actually quite a good car

That ain't bad at all.

My sister had the 96 model and its a damn nice car.
I'm aching to buy the new Civic myself, pity about the economy in the last year, had to change priorities.:(
Maybe next year...
