Car Insurance worth it?

Is there anyone here who got their stolen car returned with say tracker/ net star or car track how good are they ? That can solve the "stolen car" insurance problem. As for legal cases, 3rd party insurance can get the companies off my ass the rest of It i can live with and hope for no more accidents.

The tracking units are easy to find for well experienced thieves.

that might be the case. I bumped into someone about 3 months ago, T-boned the women, I basically drove over the stop street at the blind corner into her, looked like my fault but my statement was still contradicting to hers, the total costs of my damage about R5000, it was a light bump , fixed most of it myself, now having insurance companies over your ass all the time saying you have to pay and its your fault, basically, case 1 : they come to you saying you have to pay. I tell them to read the statement, next case : they do the same thing saying that they have read the statement, so I ask them to prove it, it takes even longer and more money for them, they will come back with a law suit most probably , keep in mind I have no insurance. So ok, her costs is about 20k as mentioned , I still refuse to pay, this time I ask them to prove it and tell the same thing to their lawyers. their lawyers agree, its back to square one for the companies, If their lawyers don't agree I ask them what procedure they followed. at the end of the day its not worth it for the companies to sue me. Now saying a rear bumper is my fault is not the case, acording to the K53 driving instructions you have to look in your rear mirror before you make a stop, if its a emergency stop then you need to tell them what the emergency stop is for, and in this case it will not be my fault due to my slow reaction but rather the person/ truck in front of you. If you did look in your mirror you would have seen me. If they didn't then I can put in a counter claim. ok it can be my fault yes but you still have to prove it. Meaning the insurance company has a big job proving my statement wrong.

so the rule of the thumb is: If you have a accident make sure you do not admit it is your fault unless you want to screw yourself.

SO how will YOU prove that I didn't look in the mirror before I hit the brakes...Oh, look even my hazards are flashing. Go prove I switch them on after you hit my rear! You won't get out of this one.

Look mate...I never had car insurance for 20 years! I never had brand new cars and never will either. It's wasting of money.
Had 2 very minor accidents only, both NOT my fault. Both times the car wasn't moving. I know it's risky, that's why I protect the others first!

And yes, I do look in the rear miror & try to predict which way you will swing when I slam the brakes. Not an easy or allways possible task though. 3'd party is good...what would be even better is if all as$#oles on the road could drive properly and safely.

If you want to do my game, you have to learn to predict when an accident will occure and do your best to avoid it without endagering others even if it means that you'll take some damage. Fixing your car only is far better than hitting someone and having the Ins. robbers all over you. Good luck.

that is that thing they have to prove that it is my fault, when I have a accident make sure you never say "oops, sorry, my bad" or anything similar, in law its innocent until proven guilty, never admit its your fault!!!! If my statement lets say after a accident is contradicting then that insurance companies will have a hard time getting cash out of me. Besides that how often do accidents occur? I feel like insurance is a waste of money.
Wait until you have an accident where someone other than yourself is injured and you'll be glad you have insurance. Unless you relish the idea of losing your house along with all your other possessions.

What if you get hit by a taxi, or you hit one?
You reckon the taxi driver is going to smile at you and offer to fix your car?

How about if you hit a Mercedes?
A pedestrian?
Cyclist?

And if your car gets stolen?

Good luck mate. :)

I would have to agree here I would rather pay then have to cough up for the above.

Listen to my story and think twice before deciding not to have Car Insurance.

I have been paying faithfully since around 1987, a little more than 20 years to one particular Company. Actually when I phoned in to give them my Policy Number they hesitated on the other end of the phone realising the code represented a long standing customer.
Be that as it may I paid and paid for all those years without anything happening and I probably like many other people also wondered what a waste of money given that I had paid for so long with no benefit, until ..... here it gets interesting.

About 2 years ago my Nephew is driving my car and my daughter (only 18 with a new licence) is driving my wife's car in convoy around sunset. They approach a robot near Koeberg Road with my Nephew in the front car and my Daughter behind.
It is just then that a man (drunk) in a bakkie careers into the back of my Daughter with force who in turn bumps into my Nephew. Both my cars involved in the same accident.
To cut a long story short the Insurance Company did their best to help us and although it was an absolute pain to wait for panel beaters and parts to come they paid without any fuss and in actual fact they went out of their way with follow up phone calls etc.
Total Cost - A little more than R100K.

Now if that was not enough read this. My wife's car which sustained the most damage from the impact in the accident above had just come back from the panel beater and a month later, some guy (also drunk) drives into the back of the car in an identical manner as the first accident and once again the Insurance Company has to pay. Cost R80K.

R180K's worth of claims after 20 years pretty much paid for itself, I think.
In each case the claims were dealt with in a courteous and professional manner.

My question in the incidents above is this. What if the Police had taken the drunk person in for alcohol analysis and furthermore lets pretend you did not have any Insurance cover and given the fact that it was not our fault in both accidents who would we have claimed from, because as far as I know an Insurance Company does not pay out if the person was certified drunk at the time of the accident. And what about people that don't have Insurance and no money. Who is going to pay your expenses.
In my opinion pay the premiums as one day you just might need it.

How can anyone take you serious with that sentence?

Insurance is all about risk like medical aid. choose the wrong option and you get screwed.

Its all about your needs. If you drive a luxury vehicle you may wanna insure it if you cannot really afford to buy another one cash the next day. If I am Bill Gates I may not wanna insure anything except maybe my life.

Now if I drive a R10 000 nissan bakkie and can replace it easily, I won't bother with insurance. however if that bakkie is my bread and butter I will definitely consider like R200pm on insurance.

I am on Hollard pay as you drive, got my wifes car on it too. I pay between R700 to R1000pm and it includes the tracker fee.

@OP: should someone be injured or killed in an accident, no matter what your naive notions about the law and culpability may be... your **** is screwed pal, seriously: game over.

At the very least you should have 3rd party - this is law in many countries, you'll spend the night in jail in the UK (for instance) if caught driving without insurance.

EDIT: reading back on some of the astonishingly idiotic posts in this thread has actually made me fear driving home this evening, to think that there are morons like this on the road is nerve wracking even while I'm safe behind my desk... honestly: there should be an I.Q. limit below which an individual may not under any circumstances drive any vehicle whatsoever.

I have comprehensive insurance to protect me from the morons who don't have insurance. Having insurance is mandatory in the US and UK I believe, and should be here too. At the end of the day whether its mine or their fault, my insurer will pay for the repair. Because of that I don't give a damn if they get the money back from the other person or not.

in case of someone being killed your screwed regardless, if you hit or kill a child its even worse.I doubt that insurance can bail you out of manslaughter .

Morgoth sounds like you trying to convince yourself about not taking out car insurance. Good job dude, i believe you. Now dont take that insurance out. Happy safe motoring:)

xD nah I guess I have no choice, someone with insurance isn't going to be safer on the road then someone without it though, taxi drivers are everywhere :)

Yep - I was sued for an amount in excess of r10 million after an accident by a passenger in my car (who incidently freely admitted the accident wasnt my fault).

That sort of experience can really put a dampener on your day.

Morgoth makes the general IQ level of Pretoria drop all on his own!

Now listen here Morgoth,. It's not a damn contribution, it's an excess and is in the insurance policy document you signed.

Now if I have to pay a excess because you drove over a stop street and t-bone me, and I have to pay the excess and they can't recover it from your uninsured ass to give back to me, you'd better be prepared for trouble... to your physical person that is...

@ AMIDA:
Take me as you wish, but I'm not insane.

Quite right!
Also if you car is new and you're paying the bank for it, they won't let you drive without insurance coase it's technicaly still their car!

Thing is, if you are in an accident with someone that does not have insurance it will not be hard to make it look as if it is their fault. Remember, they are stupid because they do not have insurance and because they do not have insurance OBVIOUSLY they are trying to argue that is was not their fault. So it will be rather easy to make them look guilty and then after your insurance company unleashes their lawyers on the poor sod you are more than welcome to talk to your personal lawyers and perhaps se if you can milk the idiot for a little extra.

Keep in mind this is all about evolution, survival of the smartest, and it is your job to ruin this idiot (who insults our gene pool) and make sure the idiot has no future.
