Car purchase options

Decent budget that. Get a 320d F30, or GTI/GTD then call it a day.
Kinda disappointed with the GTD, you would think for a Diesel it would have much more torque I guess they didnt want the GTD to be faster than the GTI

Any good Hyundai/Kia options? They have long warranties. Though they not that affordable any longer
Theres been some videos on youtube about the warranties not being worth it, they dont honour claims.

Have you considered the 320d?
I have a genuine question here and not picking fights or poking the bear

There seems to be a cult following for the 320D here but what about the 520d? I see so many around are they not good cars? Is the car too heavy for the 2.0d?

GTD was an extremely poor seller locally unlike Euroland. Culled in a short space of time man.
Yeah they had earlier models of the GTDs we never got and there was a cry from SA to VWSA to bring here but the sales werent high I know 2 owners of these in the 7.5 variant they are brilliant cars though

They are definitely still good cars, but they won’t be as agile as the 320d, power will also be pap due to weight, Maintenance is also higher, suspension is more on the luxury side of things so shocks will cost an arm and a leg. 320d is a bit “basic” so it has less chances of expensive things breaking on it. Let’s not forget it is a looker too. The 5 series looks boring and dull .

I always tell people who buy cars based on longer warranties this, A warranty could be 10 years but it is worthless if you have to fight everytime you need to claim or have to wait months for parts to arrive.

Haval is an example of this( I am not fighting here guys so put your guns away) They have good warranties but the after sales service is shocking, You put in a claim for warranty and have to wait 3 months for parts to arrive, if you get in an accident your car will be sitting at panel beaters gathering dust for 3 months while waiting for parts to arrive. So now as a consumer you just need to pray and hope nothing ever goes wrong because the wait will be long when you need that warranty, To me that is simply not worth it. I want a car that has parts readily available so it can get back on the road as quickly as possible. A long warranty is the last thing I would consider when car shopping.

Sadly it's the same with Mazda. Parts mostly come from Japan and it's a long wait.
Once I went to get a spare air filter for my Mazda 2 and they didn't even have any stock across 3 dealerships, had to wait a week.

But the cars that you do get parts for, also get stolen because they are locally made and have tons of parts. So it's a catch 22.

I quite like the Mazda 3 and especially the CX-30, but some other options to consider would be the new Honda HRV 1.5 or BRV 1.5 (a bit underpowered though) and maybe the Suzuki Vitara 1.4T (although the dealership network is pretty small for Suzuki and the interiors just don't feel as nice as Mazda or Honda).

The new Tucson is nice (2.0, reliable automatic gearbox without dual clutch nonsense, 7 year engine warranty, 6 year service plan) but I think even the demo models are outside of your budget.

Yeah I think Mazda is also one of those with unlimited warranty’s, and you are right, the popular cars to get stolen but to me that is a problem for insurance. I prefer popular cars because you don’t have to wait for parts or you can simply go to a scrap yard and find parts easily. They are also easier to work on so finding help when something breaks is also easy.

The Mazda 3 definitely looks nice and man that interior is to die for.

Even a second hand fortuner 2.4 would work great for Op but then it might get stolen before anything even breaks on it. Infact if he is not in Gauteng/North west/Limpopo/kzn or Mpumalanga I would highly recommend a fortuner 2.4

This would not be a bad view when most of the theft was out of parking lots or garages, but with hijackings and hostage situations on the increase I think it's very much a bigger problem. If I lived in Europe I'd take a Corolla Cross anyday for R450k but 100% no in SA.

That bmw is a good car, but if you're looking st limiting running cost look at the cost of tyres and first see if you can stomach that.

I've got a friend with an f30 320i msport and he spent over R20k on a set of tyres a year or two back. That might be a bit rough for some.

Hello

I am looking to get an automatic daily driver that will last me for the next 10 years & it must be comfortable to drive with services not been too expensive.

Budget is around the 450K mark. No kids, just need something practical & long lasting.

Currently looking at the Mazda 3 (https://www.autotrader.co.za/car-fo...tina/26778749?vf=2&db=1&s360=1&so=1&pl=1&po=1) or Corolla (https://www.autotrader.co.za/car-for-sale/toyota/corolla/xr/26785791?vf=1&db=0&s360=0&so=0&pl=0&po=1)

Anything I should add to my list?
Corolla for sure. I'd also consider a used Lexus.

Since it's just a daily driver, I wouldn't mind a F30 without the M-Sport. Tyres is something I will look into.

I can't find a Lexus IS within budget and I don't like the previous gen looks. If the current IS was cheaper, I wouldn't mind it.

That’s all BMWs with run flat tyres: my 320i Luxury Line had tyres that cost over R4000 each.

Ironically the Luxury Line spec is the hardest to find in South Africa. Seems BMW just flogged countless barebones M Sport F30 3 Series. I really liked the Luxury Line spec … nice alloys, chrome trim and fake wood panelling lol. No open pore wood for 3 Series money sadly.

Youi can use normal tyres and save a ton of money, you just wont want have "spare".

I use to use normal tyres on mine, so much cheaper and less road noise.

Guys just negotiate at your tyre dealer? They’d rather sell 2-4 a bit cheaper than you going elsewhere.

Replaced 18” run flats for much less than 20k. Pretty sure it was closer to 13-14k for all 4 and they weren’t cheap brands.

Albeit if you can’t afford two run flats popping, you probably can’t afford the car
