Okay, so I passed my drivers today! w00t w00t! :D

It's time to think about getting a car...

Now, clearly I need to save for a deposit, and I'm keen on getting a Toyota Tazz or a Opel Corsa (those are my 2 main choices at the moment as I've driven in them - the Tazz being the number 1 option)

What else must I need to know as I embark on this adventure.

I know I probably need to take someone who knows cars (my girlfriends father has volunteered for this job) but what else.

Please guys, give me advice so I know...

Probably won't start looking for at least 2/3 months, but now is a good time to start this adventure by getting to know what I should.

Buy a 200 Nissan Sentra u pansy :p

They go second hand for around R 50k. I'm thinking of getting myself one again :o

chances of finding one thats not been severly abused is slim... might as well try find a superboss then....

Total budget - I'm not sure... I'm looking at maybe R60000 / 5 years.

I need to save up for a deposit so I'll only really start looking in 3 months'ish.

I'd like to have insurance included - gosh, since i'm paying it off, I will look at spending maybe R1200/R1300'ish :(

Deposit is not a big thing these days ;) I would not advise about buying without paying a deposit but if you go speak to a dealer they can help you ;)

For about R 1 300 you will need to look at the R 30- 40k range of cars :(

My Bakkie is R 2600 big deposit and it was a purchase price of R 118 000

I dont think insurance is negotiable on a financed car...
i would prob go between a golf or corsa. Lean more towards the golf. You can get some decent ones for 40k.... Still leave you with extra "in case" money to put aside

and try avoid the tempatation of doing residual.......

gdiza, don't ever buy a Citi golf :D

There is nice bargains to be had. But your budget is a bit low :( R 1300 incl insurance, you might as well buy a R 20k bike

I want a car, no arguing there and I don't want a VW Golf... i've been driving in my gf's car and I just can not for the life of me get the bloody clutch right so I'm always rolling etc (especially on hills) and it kills my confidence.

But in the Corsa, Uno, Tazz that I did my driving lessons in, I had no problem so those 3 are on my 'to get list'

a friend I know has one and those little cars are pretty good value for money ;)

Or get a "Getz" ?

Dono mate, there is lovely cars but you need to look at the R 50 - 60k range for a desent car tbh :o

there is nothing wrong with a citi golf for a first time car actually? And parts are silly cheap on replacement....I dont particularly like them either, but i would pick it over an uno any day.....i feel the tazz's are usually pricey, so would prob pick a corsa then out of the 3.

the ford ka is a win, but ur not gonna find em in that price range...Try looking for a honda ballade then? damn reliable, ugly as sin, but damn reliable...

+1

Can't go wrong there. You should find a nice one for around R 40k. Let me go check quick.

He'll pay more for a Citi Golf on insurance, and they are the most stolen car in SA - last time I checked the stats.

A Honda ballade or that Corolla (Twincam model) are a go. The Corolla is also risky as a Gold though.

Those GLE shapes.... 95/96 I think ?

I love those corolla's :o

yeah i guess, i had a honda ballade through some of my mroe sensible varsity days, boring and average, but did not cost me a cent besides petrol.....I found the older corollas heavy on juice, but that could be a one experience thing....

Between the 2 cars you posted. Opel Corsa hands down.

Reasons: Corsa has fuel injection, the engine is just way better than the Tazz, I've driven a Tazz before and it feels like it's going nowhere, Corsa on the other hand will do 160km/h no problem. You can also pick up some awesome Corsa GSI's for around R50 000 which would be even better. Tazz is more reliable than the Corsa tho, Corsa Lite you're unlikely to have reliability problems but the GSI can sometimes be a bit of bastard.

Corsa is also very moddable (especially the Lite) for when you're looking for a bit of extra performance.

If you go for a Corsa, do yourself a favour and get one with Aircon. Also when you take it for a test drive, make sure to take it into traffic, stand still type traffic so you can hear the fan click on, etc. Most of the problems that you can have on a Corsa will surface at that point. Check that it doesn't rattle too much, if they removed a bunch of panels and then buggered it up the car will rattle so usually no rattle is what you want. Try get one with full service history and no mods of any kind, including mags/rims (unless it's Opel rims) and 6x9's in the backboard.

Anything with an Engine capacity of less than 1600 that has an aircon = Fail ;)

Aircon is a bitch on Power. Only time I really get to use it now is on my Bakkie. Don't even feel it with the V6. On my 1600 I could use it but never did because of the power loss :(
