Car shaking at high speeds

Hi everyone,

I currently own a 2016 Mercedes A200 Urban. I seem to be having an issue where the car shakes (I can feel it on the steering and and where my feet are). It happens between 115-140km/h.

I done the following to see if it’s an issue:

1) I checked the rims to see if there were buckled. One was, but it got fixed
2) balanced all wheels
3) done an alignment
4) checked all wheels and they seem in good condition

The car moves smooth below 115km/h. I took the car to the Mercedes dealership and they tell me that it’s just the roads, but I drive the same roads almost every day and I’ve been noticing this issue occurring and getting worse. I even had one of the mechanics drive with me to feel and even then, he says it’s hard to diagnose.

They’re going to take the car in to check again in a weeks time, but it will be the 4th time I’m sending the car in and I’m worried they will give the car back to me again saying there are no issues.

Does anybody know what the problem may be?

Get the suspension bits checked.. lower control arms, tie rod ends etc.. I had a bent lower control arm on one of my cars, and this caused exactly what you are describing..

Drive slower!

On serious note, get them to check the camber angle.

I’ll ask them to check the bearings.

In terms of Tyres, I have it at 2.5 at the front and 2.2 at the back (that’s what it recommends for my wheel size). I also pump the tyres myself when they are cold so that I know they are accurate!
 
What caused the wheel to buckle? That corner of the suspension should be checked

could also be the brake Rotors/Disk, does the noise/Shaking happen when applying the brakes?
especially on a Mercedes, the Pads are deliberately made a bit smaller than the Rotors, so they dont wear out evenly, and leave a ridge on the outside, so it squeals like mad.

another brilliant German Decision, so you MUST change Rotors when you change pads,

Have a suspension check done by a company that specializes in that.

Then take their findings report (and the bill) to that useless Mercedes dealership.

I have no clue! I got the car last year in October and I’ve never hit any potholes since I’ve got the car. I just noticed it slowly getting worse over time and when I went in for balancing, I was told my wheel was buckled.

Thankfully it doesn’t happen when applying brakes - only at the speeds I mentioned. When I drive the car below those speeds, it’s an absolutely smooth ride

Honestly worth a shot! I’ll contact the dealer and I’ll let them know I’ll be doing this next week!

was it second hand ?

My car did this and I'm almost sure it was in an accident. It was a demo but the seat would shake violently at 80km+
They rotated the tires and did alignment and it was fine but still shakes when I break at high speed.
 
My first suggestion would have been wheel alignment and balancing but you have done this already, was it a dealership or independent tyre place? I would have next suggested looking for a buckled or damaged wheel but you have done this, how are the tyres in terms of wear and/or damage? Have you had your shocks checked at all? Other parts of the suspension, bushes for excessive wear and links/arms/etc. for damage.

So the alignment, balancing and the fixed buckled rim we’re all done at Supaquick.

In terms of the tyres, Mercedes did replace them as they thought they were an issue. They’re still in pretty great condition and the tread appears to be wearing evenly. The previous tyres though had the tread worn out on the front-left side of the car.

I don’t think they checked the shocks and suspension stuff.

I’ve been messaging the mechanic at the dealership to check all of this as well when the car next goes on!

Yes! The vehicle was second hand! I also suspected that there may have been some front-end damage, but Mercedes ensured me that based on all their checks, the vehicle was never in an accident.
