Hi, I'm looking to upgrade my car sound, whats recommended for a 2 door car like a toyota celica (6th generation), I don't want to spend more than R2000 , I wont need to change the head unit.

Alot of people dont like 6X9s but Id recommend it for you.
Get a little 500 - 800w amp and some 500w 6x9s.

Well what are you looking for from your car sound? Taxi bass or full spectrum quality? The latter being the more expensive. R2k won't really cut it. You'll probably just need a split system, sub and amp but the brands and power outputs will be determined by what kind of sound you're after. Little 6X9s won't cut it imo - they cannot reproduce low frequencies very well at all...

JK8 ? you know your sound like your cars :)

if they where 500 Watt RMS 6x9's. i would say they would be very potent, and probably cost a few grand by themselves :)

never look at the sign that says 5 million watts... its RMS that counts.

PMPO is a Chinese thumbsuck power measurement - it's indicative of absolutely nothing apart from one's ignorance if you buy into that concept. As 4cer mentions - RMS output is what counts. But even then, 500W 6X9s cannot reproduce low frequencies very well at all still. The size of the cone just makes it impossible...

I'm looking for some bass and sound quality, was thinking of getting new front speakers, I believe they're 6 inches. 6X9's for the back, 10 inch sub(I still want trunk space, and an amp. What brands are good ? I 'd like my sound to be comparable to my Logitech speakers Z2300.

You'd have to up your price range for that kit - by not that much though. And Logitech aint the best benchmark in terms of sound quality btw.

For your price range, you're looking at Pioneer sub, Earthquake amp, JBL/Pioneer split system - for a 500W system I'd guess you're looking at around the R2.5k mark. Those are the brands that are semi-decent in your price range imo...

I had 640W PMPO 6x9s 5 way Pioneer speakers with a 1000w 4 channel amp.
It was powerful! And by low frequencies you mean bass? Believe me there was lots!!!

Cost me R1600, basic but goooood!

There was no proper bass reproduction, I can assure you - you might have heard some low frequencies but it in no way compares to having dedicated bass bins. And the PMPO rating is a heap of hogwash - it means sweet nothing in the world of sound - it means everything to the Chinese marketing departments though...

500W aint all that much to be honest. But if that's what you're after then pick up a 2channel 500W sub, 500W amp and a 300W split system. You might be able to hit your budget, it won't put out all 500W and you'll have some headroom to avoid blowing anything...

a 500W sub might be a bit much for what he wants :) z2300 spec.

a 400W sub made my old corsa shake like crazy :) if you want space, maybe go for the new shallow subs.

they are more expensive though.

I know sound fundis and DJs and also other experts say the bass is not pure, But i listen to RnB and Hip Hop music, I like taxi bass so 6x9s work.
PMPO rating does count for an indication of the power output and yes also for chinese marketing, but it is a rating and you can judge using it.

If you have 6x9s in a hatchback the boot acts as a box and you can get incredible bass from just that. Its a 1990 Celica? it has a big boot.

I did have alot more bass than I expected, the mirrors used to shake and then also it was a 5 way system with 4 tweeters... its not bad imo thats why i recommended it.

I would recommend a set of 6" splits, 10" sub & a 4-channel amp.
IMHO Targa is great value for money.
Stay away from 6x9's if you want decent sound quality.

I'm guessing the 6" splits are for the front speakers, what about speakers at the back ?

You won't need any speekers for the rear.

How often are there passengers on the rear seat?

Here are 3 installers I would recommend.

a good 6" split system will set u back about a grand. dont worry about the rear as most SQ guys will tell you. a decent 4 channel amp will cost you about R2k. and you can get a cheap sub for a few hundred for some low frequencies.

Why would he need a 4 channel amp?
