Howdy,

I have a budget of R250k, not a car guy. I have been on my motorbike for the better part of 10 years so back into the game.

Single guy,
Would like to put kayak on top
Bicycles for those sunny days down by the beach
Couple trips to Plett from CPT per year.

Otherwise I am super flexible, any suggestions on what to look at?

Duster.

I was linked the Subaru as an option, but was advised to avoid due to parts? I have no idea how worried I should be regarding parts.
Been driving Foresters for most of my driving "career". Parts on the non-performance versions can be a little pricey (on the performance versions they are quite hefty) but they very rarely go and the price is comparable to European car parts. My current Forester is 9 years old and there is only one issue with mine, a weird fault on the electrics that blows a single headlight every year. A R65/year cost. Other than that I've replaced nothing except tyres and brake pads.

I'm about to upgrade to the new one now. I won't drive anything else and believe me I tried, Honda, Renault, Toyota, Ford and Merc. Subaru for life!

I liked the Subaru XV 2.0 i test-drove but that naturally aspirated engine has less power than a motorbike. Back then I opted for a 2.0 CX-5 and it pulled far far better.

But from the Subaru drivers I do know, reliability is bulletproof. In your position I would consider a Subaru, but don't overlook a Duster, CX-3 or Ford EcoSport?

I would not drive a BMW without maintenance plan, but thats my view.

Have looked at the CX-5, CX-3, Volvo V40 Cross country, Eco Sport and the VW Tiguan. Then I got tired and had a nap, looking at cars is painful.

Of them all the V40 and CX-3 are in my bracket and I do like them. CX-5 is just a big CX-3, I did not enjoy the Eco sport and the VW is a bit pricey. I have not had an opportunity to drive the Subaru.

My next stop is to look at the Duster.

Look no further than the Outback.

Subaru and kayak on the roof goes like nuts in a sack

Forester +1, brother have the latest one, if you are not performance orientated, it is definitely value for money, even the older versions.
