Car tech that's become must-have

+1 on the android auto thing. I can charge my phone out of sight and still have google maps and spotify playing
 
Cheapest car I found with adaptive cruise control, adaptive high beams and an auto tailgate was the Tiggo 8 Pro for R582k...
 
I need it all lol. I literally could not live without the features. I added R250k to my Volvo I just told them to order it with everything possible.

But my top list is:
Keyless entry - I detest using a key or pressing a remote I mean it’s not 1998
Automatic lights and wipers
Connected car function so I can preheat or precool before I go
Adaptive cruise control (Volvo has semi autonomous which is awesome too especially for when I’m trying to get my latte sorted out)
Run flat tyres - I’m not paying money for a car to have to change tyres myself instead of driving to a garage.
CarPlay
Automatic trunk/boot with foot swipe for when I’m carrying stuff.
Sound system - at least one sub or branded like Bose, Harmon Kardon, B&O etc

Say you're old without saying you're old: "Change is bad and most features these days are not 'needed' and are nice-to-have only. Cars were better x years ago and it wasn't all so complicated".

Just because you aren't moving with the times doesn't mean the times aren't moving without you.

While your garden mechanic may not know what OBD is and how to diagnose your car doesn't make early 90s cars inherently better.

Reminds me of these old articles where people were boycotting seatbelt laws or that airbags are equally deadly...a backup camera is a safety issue first of all. It practically removes the risk of bumping into a child or animal (or pole) when reversing. Sure you may not 'need' it but why wouldn't you want it at a negligible cost increase to the car?

Just like nobody 'needs' a smartphone or 'the Internet' yet here we are.
 
to be honest, these are nice to haves. All of them. All I need is aircon and power steering. That’s it! But I do enjoy all the tech that comes with my car. I mean, might as well use it right?

Cruise control is nice if you want to maintain a constant speed. It does not help with any maniacs whether on the road or in the park.

You are confused about keyless entry and keyless start.

I can’t do without both. Once you have it, removing your remote from your pocket/ some guys have manbags becomes very annoying :-)

Disagree: Unless you driving something that where you cannot see behind you, reverse cameras are not a must have. Something the size of those American oversize bakkies/trucks.

Nope, I will avoid these cars as far as possible. More a security risks than cars with keys/immobilisers.

I guees it's one of those things where everybody thinks of it differently.

Android Auto.
I use andriod auto everytime when going out of town for maps. I actually won't buy a car these days if it does not include Android auto.

Reverse camaras.
Not eseential but it is nice to see exactly how far away I am from something behind me.
The beeping only is also very good for that.

So a very nice to have for me.

Keyless.
Yeah, I can go without it.

I like to know where my keys are and it's a bit annoying because I place my keys many times where my house keys are and then forget the car keys in the car.

Just to realise the car won't lock when pressing the button on the door handle.


Adaptive cruise control with
lane keep assist.
Very nice to have the car moans when you are not holding the steeing wheel tight enough.

It's also fantastic for the car to just break for other cars infront and match their speed.

I just keep my setting to hold the furthest following position which is far enough for me to also react if something else foes wrong.

It's also unfornately far enough for the ahole drivers to get into the gap because they cannot wait for the car in front of me to just pass somebody at normal speed.
