Car tech that's become must-have

The must have techs are the basic ones, power steering, electric windows, central locking and aircon.

The nice to have techs are automagic, android auto/apple car play/ and then all the screens and cameras and sensors.

My next vehicle will have android auto/apple carplay without a doubt but that is a quality of life improvement rather than a must have technology for the car to function.

Go drive your car with a manual starter, without a handbrake, without power steering, without seatbelts, without airbags, without a radio, without indicators or a hooter.

Complacent, and lulled into a false sense of security - and more likely to cause a serious accident.

I would not buy a car without all the above
 
I could never buy a manual car ever again lol. In city traffic? I just cant.
 
Young ones, it is story time, I have two older brothers (we are 4 altogether), brother A bought a car and brother B drove it, whilst brother A was overseas. The car had ABS, which was rare in a 90s car. Brother B developed a nasty habit of riding on peoples tails and relying on the ABS to brake in time.

Brother A came back, and Brother B bought himself a car, this car although newer had no ABS, brother B promptly rear ended another car whilst driving. Thats because he relied on the previous cars ABS instead of properly learning to drive and brake.

Agree, but I was referring to the fact that are many drivers like him, relying on the technology of the car and not upskilling their own driving skill.

Take example the lane assist, why is that necessary? Is it not tired/distracted people that need this? You should always pay attention when driving, if tired, you should not be driving.

I have been driving for almost two decades.
I do not need lane assist but every driver ever sometimes goes over a lane by accident.

The technology helps keep the car where it should be and tucks the steering wheel in the correct direction if needed.
In my car it does not work below, I believe 80km/h.
It does not work if the car cannot detect lanes.
If your hand are not on the steering wheel the car will constantly beep.
Nobody will be having a good sleep with that beeping.

It's not meant to be a self-driving car it's meant to assist in keeping the car in the lane for safety reasons.
If somebody cannot under normal conditions keep a car 99.9% in the correct lane it's not an upskilling issue.
They should not be driving period.

There are situations where this technology can actually save lives for example if a person gets a stroke or passes out the car can maintain
proper following distance without going into another lane and even stopping if the car detects it's going to collide with another car.

I would prefer to have no drunk drivers on the road but if a drunk driver was on the road I would prefer they have these technologies on.
 
I agree on Carplay. The rest is nice but not a necessity, except perhaps the rear-camera, depending on the vehicle.
 
Wait until someone brings up automatic vs. manual gearboxes. The arguments will heat up to biblical proportions. What’s more pure? Who can feel the exact moment to change gears? What about optimising fuel consumption etc etc etc?

Thankfully this will all be a thing of the past with EVs around the corner ;)

There I would agree wholeheartedly, especially with a car that has 235/40 ZR18's fitted (my ex Seat Leon Cupra for example) or wider.

The other standard features on that car were certainly handy, though definitely not essential.

FTR, my first car was a Golf LS (1100cc 4-door). A year thereafter I traded it in on a new 1982 Kadett GLS (1300cc). Things started to get interesting when I traded it in a year later on a new 1983 Golf GTi - and then promptly fitted 14" rims/tyres. It was still manageable for me, but the wife battled without power steering (all 1.5m of her).

Every car since had to have at least power steering.
 
Reverse cameras is a must for me now. I got into my friend's Polo and just reversed out of the driveway not looking. Goddamn, I didn't realize how used to it I became.
 
Automatic lights should be standard, the amount of idiots I see driving with their lights off because their DRLs are providing sufficient light is astounding.

Also can they ban rear fog lights.
