Carnival City Collapse

As far as i know it is... yeah....

its a bit more than a tent place, but yeah...

I may be wrong but isn't Caesars Palace the casino that started life off as a tent?

It's the one that looks like a series of giant circus tents. That place has more lights than the whole of Kimberley. They should just move that place off the grid - we'll have enough electricity for everywhere else :)

Hi,

Just 2 inform u this was not Carnival City itself.

There is a mall on the other side of the highway called Carnival City Mall.

I came past the mall lats knight on my way home from carnival and saw a coupel of cars next 2 the roud faceing the mall. I stoped & looked and saw 1 car krushed just infront of a entrance. That was 8PM. Fire fighters were still bussy.

O, and yes carnivall huses way too much power, I agree

Cheers

A band of thunderstorms was moving over Gauteng at the time, bringing winds and heavy rain.

Wet [-]coal[/-] wall.

Why is the weather blamed for everything?

It is simply shoddy construction. It is not exactly a tropical hurricane, after all.

O, just 2 mention the wind was blowing hard Northwards, with rain and hail in that area.

I was sokeing wet from a 100m dash 2 my car as I thote I left the windows open slightly. Felt like a idiat when I noticed it was closed and walked back into the casino looking like I just climed out of one of the fountens :o :o

Stood under the dryers in bathrooms a bit after draining shirt & socks of exess water.

Maths and science
Statistics reveal cause for serious concern: between 1999 and 2004, an average of only 4,4% of matriculants achieved mathematics passes adequate for gaining entry into university to study natural sciences. Between 1999 and 2004, an average 4,4% of matriculants achieved mathematics passes adequate for entry into natural sciences at university level.

The fact that in 1999 only half of the country's maths and science teachers had tertiary qualifications in these subjects is as worrying.

For the past 16 years, fewer than 7% of Senior Certificate candidates passed higher-grade maths, according to a 2007 Centre for Development Enterprises survey on maths and science in schools. In 2006, only 4,8% passed higher-grade maths, and only 5,7% passed higher-grade science, Finweek's report says.

^^ why we have no engineers.

Thats what happens if all the experienced engineers are scared away.

All Engineers are accredited by ECSA, which will be SAICE in case of Pr.Eng in Civil. The person(s) who lead the team that designed the structure is likely to be an experienced Civil Engineer. It wouldn't be the first time an experienced Civil Engineer made a judgment error if it comes out to be the case.

ECSA will investigate the case as they have done before, the truth will come out and heads will roll if negligence is the cause.

Welcome to the 3rd world let's see...

Power crisis... check!
Accused rapist soon to be president... check!
Sewage failure imminent... check!
Building collapse... check! (to be fair building collapses happen everywhere but just in case this is BEE related)

I could go on and on

This is the third collapse of a mall-like place in what 3 years. And thats only the ones I know of. All three were blamed on weather (wtf...We don't even have hurricanes here). Other two were Menlyn and Equistria (no deaths, both roof collapse/damage). I'm not keen on more "judgment errors".

does a final year B Eng (Civil) student specialize as a structural engineer ? Or is this only achieved after registering as a Pr Eng (Civil) ?

not familiar with the B Eng (Civil) syllabus :o

I remember Brooklyn (2002), Mimosa (1999) and Kolonnade (2001) incidents. I think all those cases were heard by ECSA tribunal in 2005. In one case, a part from all other legal fines issued, ECSA stripped the Engineer his Professional Registration.

heard something that Prof GT van Rooyen (Tuks) was called to testify in the Kolonnade incident.

don't remember for which party he testified for - from what i've heard Van Rooyen is one of the leading SA experts in his field of expertise.

There is no specialization yet at that level. At UCT, students do similar prerequisite courses in Final Year. After a person graduates, they can follow a Structural Engineering field together with some advanced Post Graduate Structural Engineers courses. After that, the person can register as Pr.Eng Civil (Structural Engineering).

A Pr Eng in Civil (Geotechnical Engineering), will not be allowed to accredit a Structural Engineering design and vice-versa.

Yes, he's one of the leading expects who is still teaching and can be tapped on as an independent adviser.
