carpal tunnel

is there any over the counter drugs that can temporary relieve the pain till my doctor returns to do the op? my right hand is so bad now the pain is up to my elbow already :( can barely sleep at night :(

If you used your keyboard correctly you would not have had this problem :p

Is surgery the only option? I get pain sometimes when I type, using a program that reminds me to take breaks between typing. Have also angled my keyboard so that I can't rest my wrists on the table. Have bought myself a curve keyboard for home use.

Sounds like you need an anti-inflammatory, but from my readings, you want one with steroids. I don't think there's anything over the counter. In the interim, looks like myprodol is your only option (buy the generic, it's cheaper).

My dad had it + operations on both wrists and he works outside ALL day. :/

(I have it too though, but I'm sure mine's pc related)

My aunt had Carper Tunnel Syndrome. Couldnt do anything with her left hand . She went for Ayurvedic treatment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayurveda) in a well known centre in India. I was with her during the course of the treatment (+- 6 week ). She is now completely cured. Believe it or not.

Perhaps 6 weeks of R&R was all she needed? Pretty sure that's all she got from the treatment ;)

*edit*
Reading the Wiki article, sounds like they sometimes perform surgery! Eek.
In some cases, alcohol is used as a narcotic for the patient undergoing an operation.[6] The advent of Islam introduced opium as a narcotic.[10] Both oil and tar are used to stop bleeding.[6] Traumatic bleeding is said to be stopped by four different methods ligation of the blood vessel; cauterisation by heat; using different herbal or animal preparations locally which facilitate clotting; and different medical preparations which constrict the bleeding or oozing vessels.

A systematic review of ayurveda treatments for rheumatoid arthritis concluded that there was insufficient evidence, as most of the trials were not done properly, and the one high-quality trial showed no benefits.[65] A review of ayurveda and cardiovascular disease concluded that while the herbal evidence is not yet convincing, the spices are appropriate, some herbs are promising, and yoga is also a promising complementary treatment.[66]

I dont think Carperl Tunnel syndrome goes away from rest, its been 2 years and she has had no issues. Clearly something worked somewhere.Western culture is normally quite critical of "alternative medicine". Ayurveda was used through out India centuries before the British colonised. Mom had Thoracic outlet syndrome (results in severe pain in the shoulder) and doctors here said there is no way out besides surgery. She is an anesthetist so uses her hand quite a bit. She visited the same Ayurvedic clinic for two years ( 6 weeks/year, 6 weeks is their standard treatment period). Her pain is now pretty much gone, I'm only reporting from experience. Lots of Indian sports players undergo Ayurveda to try and avoid surgery. Saw Sreesanth while I was there :p

I had Carpal last year. Both my hands were dead with almost no feeling for a month. I spoke with my Pharmacist and she said I could try exercise. I did a few swings of my arms each day vigorously all around at home. It hurt but it fixed it.

please don't have the surgery for this. get yourself the wrist braces and have physio done regularly. i had the surgery done because of work. didn't have time to be off work for extended periods or have time off work so thought i'd have the op and had both hands done. also heard that lots of people have had the surgery done with complications afterwards.

Western culture is quite critical of "alternative" medicine usually with good reason.

Thing about alternative medicine is that, if it works, it stops being alternative, and just becomes medicine. The "problem" is that the barrier to entry is a double blind experiment, which most alternative medicines fail. Homeopathy is bunk. Crystal therapy is bunk. It seems, from my admittedly cursory reading of Wikipedia, that Ayurveda contains a small bit of stuff that works, combined with bunk.

Believe me I am very skeptical of such things but after spending 6 weeks for the past 2 years there I cant help but think there is definitely something right about it. There is obviously a lot of crap out there but the one Ayurvedic Dr at the center is a genius at what he does. Especially after speaking to many Indian and foreign patients there I was bought in to the concept. They also work closely with hospitals and various academic institutions world wide and try get their research work published.

I'd also recommend genpayne, a myprodol generic.

Ayurveda was used through out India centuries before the British colonised.
Why does that matter?

I'll also say that there is medicine and there is not medicine. If anything in ayurveda can be shown to work then it becomes medicine.

I had it a few years ago & found the best relief was applying an ice pack.

over time it cleared & no op was needed

thought one needed a prescription for myprodol?

my sister had the op last year and she had a rough time getting strength back in her wrist? during the day when I'm working then it's fine, but just let me rest then it starts :( at night it's the worst!
