Pretoria – Caster Semenya has been undergoing medical treatment for the past few months and that is why she is now being allowed to compete as a female athlete.

Marius van der Watt, a South African coach, said on Wednesday that a high-ranking Athletics South Africa (ASA) official had informed him of this.

Richard Stander, administrative head of ASA, did not want to confirm or deny the medical treatment. He said that it has “nothing to do with you”. “Leave the poor girl alone.”

Local athletics coaches said on Wednesday that the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) had erred by not revealing the treatment.
They say that they now hear that Caster may participate, but no explanation is forthcoming about what has changed over the last 11 months and brought about the IAAF’s change of heart.

The Daily Telegraph in Britain reports that the fact that Semenya may now participate as a woman, points to the treatment being successful.

It is suspected that as long as Semenya participates in athletics, her condition will be monitored by experts to ensure she does not have an unfair advantage.

Athletes said on Wednesday they were curious what Semenya’s times would be now that she has had hormonal treatment.

Local coaches are divided about Semenya’s re-entry into athletics.

Coach Jean Verster said he accepted that athletes were relieved to finally know what the situation is with Semenya.

“The past 11 months were confusing for all of us as nobody had an idea of what was going on. This gave rise to all sorts of rumours,” he said.

“Now that the IAAF has finally announced that they are happy she is a woman, we know where we stand.

“My only question is why Caster did not receive the treatment prior to the meeting in Berlin. It would definitely have saved her and the entire South Africa huge embarrassment.”

Van der Watt is excited about Semenya’s return.

“She can definitely help my athlete, Anuschka Nice, to run better times. But then I can’t help but wonder whether the hormonal treatment will impact on Caster’s performances.”

Jenny Meadows, a bronze medal winner in the 800m at the world meeting in Berlin where Semenya won, told the Daily Telegraph that she was not surprised by the IAAF’s decision.

“I always knew Caster would participate again,” she said.

“The IAAF makes the rules and we have to accept she is a woman. I only hope that the IAAF genuinely has her interests at heart, as well as those of the woman athletes that have to compete against her.

“I’m just as curious as everyone else to see what will happen when Caster participates for the first time.”

If this is true, then surely C.S did have a huge advantage in Berlin, AKA cheated, and the record/gold medal/prize money should be taken back.
 
I knew this was what happened its not complicated to see the outcome.
She has too much testosterone in her blood - making her very masculine and very bad ass VS women.
She has treatment (probably killed the testes inside her).
A little while ago we hear that she is out of shape (aka this is what happens when you lose testosterone - men get treatment for it HRT).
Now she allowed to run again and everyone says "shame she wasn't training because she was not sure of the outcome. " - maybe to some degree but to a larger factor don't look for her to win anything anymore
now that the man juice is gone.
 
At least it can race as a she now. And if she was meant to win medals she will now have the opportunity. And the competitors will have to face it if she wins. Up until now and if they do not publish her medical records people will always wonder.

At least it is fixed and the medical risk is gone.

No its not.

It was revealed a while ago that she had testicular tissue and that was the reason for her high testosterone levels. All that has happened is that she has had that tissue removed, she didn't have actual balls.

EDIT: Also its like a disease, so its not like cheating at all. There is no reason to believe that she knew anything about this condition. Only very expensive medical tests would have told her that.

But the medal was won while she had the atvantage. So that makes it the same as using drugs she can just not be blamed for it. She can keep the medal but I think not the title?


But let her keep it if she win more with that time she can keep it as a :I TOLD YOU SO. If not it will mean nothing. Just a reminder of a horrible time.
 
It sucks for women who want to break records to have to chase records that we set by women in an officially unfair state (elevated test) whether the known or not.
I personally do not think the record should stand, let her keep the medal on the assumption she didn't know.

Why does everyone insist on calling Caster a "she" ... when Caster is said to have "both bits". What do you use to refer to people who are transgendered? Should we not have made up a new way of referring to them by now? Or are they saying that despite the medical evidence they are just going to ignore it and treat her as a girl anyway? Is that really fair on the other runners?

I think we have to refer to people by what they want to be called not by what they are. She wants to be a girl so since it's not a raging queen we call it a girl.

All this did was to leave me with a bad taste in my mouth towards ASA & IAAF. I mean come on, how flippen retarded do you have to be to be elected for one of these athletic bodies?

I dont think the IAAF can be blamed for this, because if they had handled it any otherway, the "card" would have been pulled out on them.

No, remember that the testosterone levels were never high enough to disqualify her, they were just high enough to cause concern (and an investigation). They had to make sure that the high levels were not due to drugs.

Oh I missed that.

I know it was ten times higher than a "normal" woman. The only way to get it that high was with either drugs or testice.
I'm not sure I think the record will be taken away. But I might be wrong. This will just make woman say that they can then inject testosterone to a certain level. And if it was not to high why did they not allow her to race and she have the treatment? That means she was held back for 12 months for nothing.

Things do not add up.

She identifies as a woman. Externally, she's a woman.

What would you call yourself if you discovered that you by some mischance had some ovarian tissue, or have XX or XXY chromosomes? Would you start thinking of yourself as an it?
 
TBH: it is in very poor taste to perpetuate this as a news item.

It is a HUGE indictment on ASA and our country in general that this ever even blipped on the international news scene... just leave the girl alone, stop making news out of this it is way more common than many people know or will admit and moreover it is no ones business.

Saying it was "ten times more than a normal woman" is meaningless in the context. Normal women are not competing in world-class competition. How much testosterone do women in that sort of competition have? Nine times more than normal women? Five times more? Twice as much?
 
She does not have "Both bits", she has extra tissue.

Just FYI.... if you are a balled man there is a high chance that you have exactly the same thing !
